Senior Roboticist- Stretch Manipulation

Boston Dynamics•Waltham, MA
•$135,000 - $160,000

About The Position

Boston Dynamics is hiring a Senior Roboticist for the Stretch Manipulation team. Stretch is a mobile manipulation robot for warehouse applications that has moved nearly 50 million boxes for customers around the world. The role involves hands-on development of Stretch’s manipulation stack, using algorithmic and data-driven techniques. Work takes place within a vertically integrated system, allowing close integration of software and hardware and use of fleet metrics and fleet-scale data to guide development. The successful candidate will advance manipulation capabilities such as grasping, motion generation, and next-box selection, and evaluate robotics and physical AI advances for real-world benefits before deploying them as production features. The role involves moving quickly from concepts to on-robot testing and then to polished, scalable features, while working with customer-facing teams to address warehouse challenges.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in classical manipulation, such as planning, control, or grasping, or in robot learning, such as imitation learning, reinforcement learning, or vision-language-action models, with working fluency in the other area.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree with at least 2 years of experience, or a Ph.D., in Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Experience developing and evaluating classical and learned robot capabilities in simulation and through on-robot experiments.
  • Strong physical intuition and confidence, comfort, and enthusiasm working with real robots.
  • Excellent C++ and Python programming skills in a Linux environment, along with strong debugging skills.
  • Eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience deploying robotic manipulation capabilities to production, especially in logistics or warehouse settings.
  • Publications in top-tier robotics or AI conferences and journals, such as RSS, ICRA, IROS, RA-L, T-RO, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, or CoRL.
  • A strong record in robotics competitions.
  • Familiarity with modern agentic programming workflows, such as Claude Code.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Stretch’s manipulation stack using algorithmic and data-driven techniques.
  • Advance manipulation capabilities, including grasping, motion generation, and next-box selection.
  • Evaluate robotics and physical AI advances for real-world performance benefits before deploying them as shippable features.
  • Iterate from concepts to on-robot tests and develop capabilities into scalable, production-ready features.
  • Use fleet metrics and fleet-scale data to guide innovation.
  • Engage with customer-facing teams, including Product and Customer Success, to solve warehouse challenges.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • 401(k).
  • Paid time off.
  • Annual bonus structure.
