About The Position

This position supports the Transportation Team and is located in Knoxville, TN. The candidate will lead project tasks or assist project managers with coordination and collaboration for various transportation engineering projects in both public and private sectors. Tasks include research, conceptual development, design, and constructability of roads, drainage systems, ITS, and bridges. The role also involves generating documentation for standardized design software and specifications. This position is ideal for a senior-level transportation engineer seeking to join a growing organization focused on innovative solutions and high-quality client service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering discipline and prior civil design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer software.
  • Familiarity with TDOT Design Guidelines and Standards.
  • Experience with design teams on TDOT and municipal projects (highway, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, and drainage design).
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Desire to learn new technologies.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction, including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, accuracy, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional civil engineering work including development of 3D design models, calculations, sketches, plans, and estimates for transportation improvement projects (new/widened roadways, intersection improvements, bike and pedestrian facilities).
  • Analyze data from surveys, GIS, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Assist with the development of technologies, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality for end-users and transportation systems, incorporating future-ready solutions with civil engineering design standards.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures aligned with company policy.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations, summarizing research, findings, and conclusions, and generating complete, accurate documentation using calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
  • Assist technical staff with writing/reviewing design training manuals and workflow documentation.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, providing input and analysis on design concepts, construction, mitigation, improvement activities, and remediation projects.
  • Assist with inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, infrastructure, and transportation channels to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
  • Assist with preparation of technical proposals, scoping, and labor estimates.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-discipline team of engineers to execute project work.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects.
  • Interface with clients as needed and support business development initiatives.
  • Regularly coordinate and communicate with project teams, managers, and the civil team; attend and participate in project team meetings.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
