ATCS is seeking a Senior Roadway Engineer to join their growing Virginia transportation team. This is a hybrid position based in their Herndon headquarters, offering the opportunity to work on high-profile VDOT and municipal roadway projects while helping shape the future of their roadway design practice. Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
6+ years of roadway design experience, preferably in Virginia
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; candidates licensed in other states will be considered with a commitment to obtain Virginia licensure
Experience with MicroStation OpenRoads Designer (ORD); Civil 3D experience is a plus
Knowledge of AASHTO, VDOT, and local design standards and practices
Demonstrated ability to manage design tasks independently with minimal oversight
Strong communication, project management, and leadership skills

Responsibilities

Lead and produce roadway design plans including geometric design, horizontal/vertical alignments, superelevation, typical sections, and grading for VDOT and municipal roadway/multimodal projects
Prepare and review construction plan sets, including plan and profile sheets, cross sections, drainage layouts, MOT/TMP plans, and signing and pavement marking plans
Apply VDOT Road Design Manual (RDM), Road and Bridge Standards, and IIM/LAP requirements to ensure design compliance across state and federally funded projects
Design to county-specific standards and design manuals for local projects, including Fairfax County (Public Facilities Manual / PFM), Prince William County (Design and Construction Standards Manual), and Loudoun County (Facilities Standards Manual / Design and Construction Standards)
Prepare design waiver and exception documentation for non-standard design elements in constrained rights-of-way, coordinating across VDOT and local jurisdictional requirements
Coordinate with subconsultants and multidisciplinary teams (structures, drainage, traffic, environmental, ROW, utilities)
Manage design schedules, budgets, and deliverables for assigned tasks or project segments
Support QA/QC reviews and ensure design consistency and accuracy across deliverables
Interface directly with clients (VDOT, counties, municipalities) during design reviews, public hearings, and field inspections
Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers/designers
Coordinate with contractors, utility providers, and public agencies
Participate in public meetings and help drive successful project outcomes
