About The Position

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Risk Consultant / Account Manager to support our Global Corporate & Specialty division and the Aviva Risk Management Solutions (ARMS) team. In this role, you will provide advanced risk engineering expertise across a broad portfolio of energy, mining, property, casualty, and construction risks, supporting underwriting teams with high-quality risk assessments and actionable insights. This position requires deep technical expertise in energy and mining operations, including upstream/downstream oil & gas, renewable energy, and both surface and underground mining environments. You will evaluate complex industrial risks, develop loss scenarios (MFL, PML, NLE), and influence underwriting decisions across a diverse and technically demanding portfolio. This role combines strategic portfolio oversight, account management, and hands-on field risk consulting, with regular travel to client sites across Canada, and Internationally.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience in property and casualty risk engineering.
  • Extensive experience in Energy (Oil & Gas, Renewables) and Mining operations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mining and oil/gas engineering risks, including: Surface and underground mining operations, Mineral processing and refining, Tailings storage facilities and associated risks, Heavy equipment and mobile fleet exposures, Refining including Separation (Distillation), Conversion (Cracking & Reforming), Cleaning (Treating), and Blending Operations
  • Experience with contractors and builder’s risk projects in industrial environments.
  • Strong account management experience and ability to manage complex portfolios.
  • Degree or diploma in Engineering (Mining, Mechanical, Chemical, or related discipline) or equivalent experience.
  • Mining Engineering specialization or direct mining industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Professional designations such as P.Eng. or CET preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of: Mining and Oil/Gas safety and operational standards, Canadian building and fire codes, NFPA, FM Global, API, ASME, and mining-specific guidelines, Loss scenario modelling (MFL, PML, NLE)
  • Ability to Interpret wide range of processing and engineering drawings, Assess fire protection and suppression systems, Evaluate business interruption and operational continuity risks
  • Excellent technical writing and reporting skills.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Proven ability to lead, influence, and collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and risk/claims systems (e.g., Loss Control 360, Claims Center).
  • Valid driver’s license and passport (or ability to obtain).
  • Willingness to travel across Ontario, Canada, and internationally.
  • Ability to work out of Toronto (100 King St W) office and visit brokers to support GCS Underwriting team for new business opportunities
  • High proficiency in English.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct complex field surveys reporting on property and casualty risks for the construction, renewables, energy, and mining operations.
  • Perform desk-based risk assessments and develop detailed loss scenarios for large and complex industrial risks.
  • Assess exposures specific to mining operations, including processing plants, tailings facilities, heavy mobile equipment, ventilation systems, and critical infrastructure.
  • Assess exposures specific to oil and gas operations including logistics (pipelines), refining/processing, consumer distribution and storage facilities.
  • Prepare high-quality technical risk engineering reports aligned with underwriting and ARMS standards.
  • Review engineering drawings, including mining layouts, pipeline schematics processing flowsheets, fire protection systems, and critical infrastructure designs.
  • Manage a diversified risk portfolio, delivering account-level engineering expertise across construction, renewables, energy and mining sectors.
  • Provide actionable risk improvement strategies and ensure follow-up and implementation.
  • Coordinate global inspections and oversee third-party engineering providers.
  • Operate within budget and contribute to long-term strategic planning.
  • Support Underwriters in risk selection, pricing, and portfolio management with technical insight.
  • Provide guidance on resolving risk engineering deficiencies across energy and mining operations.
  • Participate in client meetings, marketing initiatives, and industry roadshows.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Review claims and conduct site visits to identify root causes and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Analyze business interruption exposures, particularly heavy industrial operations.
  • Promote continuous risk improvement methodologies across the portfolio.
  • Mentor and coach team members, supporting technical development and knowledge sharing.
  • Conduct peer reviews to ensure consistency and quality of deliverables.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging risks and trends in construction, renewables, energy, and mining sectors.
  • Represent the organization at industry events and technical forums.
