About The Position

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Risk Consultant / Account Manager to support our Global Corporate & Specialty division and the Aviva Risk Management Solutions (ARMS) team. In this role, you will provide advanced property risk engineering expertise across a broad portfolio of heavy industrial risks, including manufacturing, forestry, construction, warehouse supporting underwriting teams with high-quality risk assessments and actionable insights. Oil/Gas and Mining experience would be beneficial. This position is property-focused, requiring deep technical expertise in large, complex industrial facilities and processes, with emphasis on fire, explosion, equipment breakdown, and business interruption exposures. You will evaluate complex risks, develop loss scenarios (MFL, PML, NLE), and influence underwriting decisions across a technically demanding portfolio. This role combines strategic portfolio oversight, account management, and hands-on field risk consulting, with regular travel to client sites across Canada and internationally.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in property risk engineering, with a strong focus on heavy industrial risks.
  • Extensive experience assessing large property exposures in sectors such as: Manufacturing and industrial processing, Energy (Oil & Gas, Renewables), Mining (surface and underground operations), Construction and builder’s risk.
  • Demonstrated expertise in property risk evaluation, including: Fire and explosion hazards, Equipment breakdown and critical systems, Business interruption and supply chain dependencies.
  • Experience with complex industrial facilities and processes, including: Mineral processing and refining, Tailings storage facilities, Oil refining processes (distillation, cracking, reforming, treating, blending).
  • Strong account management experience with complex portfolios.
  • Degree or diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Mining, or related discipline) or equivalent experience.
  • Mining or heavy industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of: Property loss prevention principles in heavy industry, Canadian building and fire codes, NFPA, FM Global, API, ASME, and industry-specific standards, Loss scenario modelling (MFL, PML, NLE).
  • Ability to interpret complex industrial and processing drawings.
  • Ability to assess fire protection and suppression systems.
  • Ability to evaluate business interruption and operational continuity risks.
  • Excellent technical writing and reporting skills with a property risk focus.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Proven ability to influence underwriting decisions and client risk strategies.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and risk/claims systems (e.g., Loss Control 360, Claims Center).
  • Valid driver’s license and passport (or ability to obtain).
  • Willingness to travel across Canada, and internationally.
  • Ability to work out of Toronto office (100 King St W) and visit brokers to support GCS underwriting and new business development.
  • High proficiency in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Oil/Gas and Mining experience would be beneficial.
  • Professional designations such as P.Eng. or CET preferred.
  • Additional certifications (CFPS, CRM, CIP, PMP, NICET) are assets.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct complex field surveys focused on property risks across heavy industry sectors including manufacturing, forestry, energy, mining, construction, and renewables.
  • Perform desk-based risk assessments and develop detailed property loss scenarios (MFL, PML, NLE) for large industrial operations.
  • Assess key property exposures including: Fire and explosion hazards, Process hazards and critical equipment failure, Utility dependencies and infrastructure vulnerabilities, Business interruption and interdependencies.
  • Evaluate heavy industrial facilities, including: Manufacturing and processing plants, Large infrastructure projects, Mining operations (surface and underground, processing plants, tailings), Oil & gas facilities (pipelines, refining, storage, distribution).
  • Prepare high-quality technical property risk engineering reports aligned with underwriting and ARMS standards.
  • Review engineering drawings including plant layouts, process flow diagrams, fire protection systems, and critical infrastructure designs.
  • Manage a diversified property risk portfolio, delivering account-level engineering expertise across heavy industry sectors.
  • Provide actionable risk improvement recommendations and ensure follow-up and implementation.
  • Coordinate global property inspections and oversee third-party engineering providers.
  • Operate within budget and contribute to long-term strategic planning.
  • Support Underwriters in property risk selection, pricing, and portfolio management with technical insight.
  • Provide guidance on resolving property risk engineering deficiencies across industrial risks.
  • Participate in client meetings, broker engagement, and marketing initiatives.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders to support new business growth.
  • Review large property loss claims and conduct site visits to determine root causes.
  • Provide recommendations to improve loss prevention and property protection systems.
  • Analyze business interruption exposures, particularly within heavy industrial operations.
  • Promote and embed continuous property risk improvement methodologies across the portfolio.
  • Mentor and coach team members, supporting technical development in property risk engineering.
  • Conduct peer reviews to ensure consistency and quality of engineering outputs.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging risks and trends in heavy industry property insurance, including manufacturing, energy, and mining sectors.
  • Represent the organization at industry events and technical forums.
