Senior RF Engineer

STR•Woburn, MA
•$134,000 - $184,000

About The Position

The Senior RF Engineer will support research and development activities in the Space Missions and Sensing (SMS) Sector of STR’s Sensors Division. The sector develops technology for space-based sensing, space control, and counter-sensing missions. The engineer will contribute to a multidisciplinary team developing counter-sensing systems for radar, electronic warfare, and other applications. Systems are primarily deployable prototypes intended to transition to low-volume product systems. The role involves architecting, designing, implementing, integrating, testing, and verifying RF hardware systems for sensing, electronic warfare, and signal-processing applications. Work includes analyzing proposed hardware architectures, validating performance through simulation and real-world testing, conducting system tests and demonstrations, managing configuration and test data, and documenting designs, procedures, and results. The position offers opportunities for career growth in a fast-paced, expanding company. The role requires the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. Government. The full-time salary range is $134,000–$184,000. STR has locations near Boston, Massachusetts; Arlington, Virginia; Dayton, Ohio; Melbourne, Florida; Carlsbad, California; Atlanta, Georgia; and Denver, Colorado.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. Government.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with RF components and subsystems, including T/R modules, rotary joints, pedestals, filters, radiating structures, isolators, amplifiers, cables, and ADC/DACs.
  • Design experience in RF systems, subsystems, and/or component analysis, including frequency planning, link-budget analysis, transceiver architectures, and cascade analysis.
  • Experience with RF component, subsystem, and system testing, measurement equipment, and techniques, including anechoic chambers, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, and/or other higher-level programming languages.
  • Strong mathematical, troubleshooting, written, and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating hardware and software, software development, and/or integrating FPGAs.
  • Active Secret or TS/SCI clearance.
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with RF systems engineering and technologies for sensing and electronic warfare, including electronic attack, electronic protection, cognitive EW, radar, or advanced ESM techniques.
  • Prior design experience with antennas, RF printed circuit boards, RF integrated circuits, or transceiver building blocks such as power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, oscillators, mixers, and filters.

Responsibilities

  • Work with small, multidisciplinary teams to architect, design, implement, and test RF hardware systems for sensing, electronic warfare, and signal-processing systems.
  • Collaborate with the team to define goals, system performance objectives, requirements, metrics, dependencies, and risks.
  • Design, simulate, integrate, test, and verify RF hardware systems.
  • Perform performance trade studies and analyses of proposed hardware architectures, using simulations and real-world tests to validate performance.
  • Build systems; conduct bench-top unit testing; integrate and calibrate hardware; and demonstrate and document system performance.
  • Work with the signal-processing team to develop sensing-system test concepts and execution methods.
  • Plan and implement over-the-air system tests and demonstrations; evaluate hardware and system readiness; develop and evaluate performance metrics; verify requirements; manage system configuration and data; and write operational procedures and performance reports.
  • Review system effectiveness and identify opportunities to advance or mature subsystems and system capabilities.
  • Prepare design specifications, drawings, test plans, and reports.
