Senior RF Engineer

STR•Woburn, MA

About The Position

The Senior RF Engineer will support design, development, integration, and testing activities in a research and development environment within STR’s Space Missions and Sensing Sector. The role contributes to teams developing counter-sensing systems for radar, electronic warfare, and other applications. Systems are primarily deployable prototypes intended to transition to low-volume product systems. The position offers opportunities for growth in a fast-paced, expanding company. The engineer works with small multidisciplinary teams to architect, design, implement, and test RF hardware systems that enable sensing, electronic warfare, and signal-processing systems. Work includes RF system integration, test, and verification; hardware architecture analysis; performance trade studies; simulation and real-world testing; and system demonstrations. The role also involves collaboration with signal-processing teams, evaluation of system readiness and performance, configuration and data management, operational documentation, and identification of opportunities to mature system capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with RF components and subsystems, including T/R modules, rotary joints, pedestals, filters, radiating structures, isolators, amplifiers, cables, and ADC/DAC.
  • Design experience in RF systems, subsystems, and/or component analysis, including frequency planning, link budget analysis, transceiver architectures, and cascade analysis.
  • Experience with RF component, subsystem, or system testing and measurement equipment and techniques, including anechoic chambers, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, and/or other higher-level languages.
  • Strong mathematical, troubleshooting, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. Government.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Secret or TS/SCI clearance.
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience integrating hardware and software, software development, and/or integrating FPGAs.
  • Experience with RF systems engineering and technologies in sensing and electronic warfare applications, including electronic attack, electronic protection, cognitive EW, radar, and advanced ESM techniques.
  • Design experience in one or more of the following: antennas, RF printed circuit boards, RF integrated circuits, or transceiver building blocks such as power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, oscillators, mixers, and filters.

Responsibilities

  • Work with small multidisciplinary teams to architect, design, implement, and test RF hardware systems.
  • Collaborate with the team to define goals, system performance objectives, requirements, metrics, dependencies, and risks.
  • Design, simulate, and test RF hardware systems, emphasizing RF system integration, test, and verification.
  • Perform performance trade studies and analyses of proposed hardware architectures.
  • Analyze performance through simulations and real-world testing to validate system performance.
  • Build systems; perform bench-top unit testing; integrate and calibrate hardware; and demonstrate and document system performance.
  • Work with the signal-processing team on sensing-system test concepts and execution methods.
  • Plan and implement over-the-air system tests and demonstrations; evaluate hardware and system readiness; develop and evaluate performance metrics; verify requirements; manage system configuration and data; and write operational procedures and performance reports.
  • Review system effectiveness and identify opportunities to advance or mature subsystems and system capabilities.
  • Prepare design specifications, drawings, test plans, and reports.
