About The Position

This position is located within the Wildlife Division’s Wildlife Diversity Section in Augusta, Maine. The role serves as the Department’s species specialist on coastal and marine birds and addresses the Department’s involvement with proposed development in the Gulf of Maine. The position will focus on the conservation and management of birds and bats that utilize offshore habitats by investigating spatial and temporal patterns of use and assessing exposure and risk to inform environmentally responsible offshore wind energy development. This job will require a deviation from the standard work week during certain wildlife survey periods.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Fisheries or Wildlife Management, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible related laboratory or field research and/or management experience.
  • Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must answer and submit required supplemental questions as part of the Cover Letter.

Nice To Haves

  • Scientific and field knowledge of Maine’s marine birds.
  • A strong record of professional written communication skills.
  • A graduate degree in Conservation Biology, Wildlife Ecology, or related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field studies and assessments for offshore birds and bats.
  • Conduct research related to offshore birds and bats.
  • Engage in stakeholder engagement and coordination.
  • Administer contracts.
  • Serve on Science and Technical Committees.
  • Advise the Environmental Review team on offshore energy issues.
  • Support related policy discussions.
  • Provide technical assistance to Department staff, other state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations and academia.
  • Write technical reports and grant proposals.
  • Provide public outreach presentations.
  • Represent the Department at state, regional, and national meetings.
