About The Position

Position Summary The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Colorado State University is hiring a Wildlife Biologist to support natural resource management at Hurlburt Field, a U.S. Air Force installation in Florida. This position serves as a liaison with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and coordinates conservation and habitat management projects aligned with Air Force stewardship goals. CEMML supports sustainable resource management on Department of Defense and other public lands through applied science and collaboration. Hurlburt Field encompasses ~6,700 acres in Okaloosa County, Florida, supporting diverse ecosystems and mission readiness through proactive, collaborative natural resource management. Essential Job Duties:

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, natural resources, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in wildlife monitoring and management.
  • Minimum 2 years of project management or lead biologist experience.
  • Experience working in southeastern U.S. ecosystems, especially wetland and flatwoods habitats
  • Professional experience conducting field surveys for federally listed species found at Hurlburt Field such as red-cockaded woodpecker, reticulated flatwoods salamander, bog frogs, and/or federally listed bat species
  • Proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) and database management.
  • Ability to work independently in remote field conditions and coordinate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for all new hires).
  • Must be able to comply with all applicable regulations to obtain a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC) and public trust clearance. Furthermore, candidates are required at a minimum to complete a NACI/SF85 and successfully pass a federal background check to remain eligible for employment by CSU.   • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the proposed start date.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, or related field.
  • Experience working with USFWS, on military installations, or with other federal land management agencies.
  • Experience complying with and preparing compliance documents for federal environmental regulations (e.g., ESA, NEPA, Sikes Act).
  • Experience with prescribed fire planning or implementation.
  • Author or Co-author of relevant publications on species or habitats found in the region.

Responsibilities

  • Lead species monitoring and habitat restoration efforts for federally listed species.
  • Develop management prescriptions to support species conservation and habitat improvement.
  • Oversee invasive species control activities and ensure effective implementation.
  • Coordinate habitat restoration projects with partner agencies, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Support INRMP updates, and regulatory coordination and permit reporting
  • Maintain GIS and biological databases and produce technical reports
  • Prepare and administer briefings and presentations to Air Force and USFWS leadership
  • Other related duties
