About The Position

The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services helps ensure that all Albertans can live in safe and resilient communities. Working alongside its partners in law enforcement, family justice, health, the judiciary, criminal justice system and other stakeholders, the ministry has direct or shared responsibility in many elements of the justice system in Alberta. The Police Review Commission (PRC) is responsible for overseeing the police complaints process for all police services in Alberta and will have approximately 150 staff. The PRC will be at the forefront of leading and supporting police services through a significant change in process and philosophy. As the Senior Resolution Specialist for the Police Review Commission (PRC), you will take a lead role in managing complex complaints and facilitating Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes such as mediation, healing circles, and facilitated discussions. In this role, you will be instrumental in advancing PRC’s mandate to deliver accessible, responsive, and restorative complaint resolution. Your work will help shape a new philosophy in police oversight and contribute to meaningful changes across Alberta’s policing landscape.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Criminology, Law and Society, Police Studies, Sociology, or other related fields, supplemented by four (4) years related experience using Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods or conflict resolution strategies.
  • Foundational experience in alternative dispute resolution methods.
  • Some experience navigating emotionally charged situations to guide parties toward voluntary resolutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to support and communicate effectively, including with individuals experiencing mental illness, cognitive or physical impairments, and those in personal crisis.
  • Strong written communication skills to write comprehensive reports, coordinate investigative briefings with the ability to tailor content to different audiences.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high attention to detail.
  • Must be able to pass and maintain a fingerprint-based criminal records check, and other clearances required to access police databases.
  • Class 5 driver’s license and clear driver’s abstract; travel within Alberta required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with, or knowledge of, law enforcement or policing agencies
  • Experience working directly with members of the public using trauma informed and/or culturally responsive practices.
  • Knowledge of the Police Act and regulations, policing policies and procedures, and relevant provincial and federal legislation, including an understanding of police duties and responsibilities.
  • Experience providing coaching, mentorship and knowledge-sharing.

Responsibilities

  • Complaint Assessment – Review complex files, review jurisdiction, analyze patterns, and recommend resolution strategies.
  • Resolution Leadership – Facilitate ADR processes such as mediation and healing circles, leading the most sensitive or high-risk cases.
  • Service Excellence – Apply advanced trauma-informed and culturally sensitive practices to address conflict and support fair outcomes.
  • Collaboration – Partner with investigators, legal counsel, and case coordinators to resolve files efficiently and transparently.
  • Reporting & Recommendations – Prepare resolution reports and recommend next steps to decision-making committees or management.
