About The Position

Connective is a non-profit organization focused on social services and community well-being. The Inlet Recovery Home is a stabilization and supported recovery program offering short-term (30-90 days) housing and recovery support for up to eight individuals transitioning from treatment. The program provides 24/7 staffing, including case management, peer support, life skills development, and connections to external services. This is a non-clinical recovery residence for individuals who have completed or do not require medically supervised withdrawal care.

Requirements

  • Diploma, preferably in behavioural sciences, social work, community social services or criminology or equivalent with two-years related experience.
  • Experience in the appropriate field and demonstrate a clear ability to respond well in crisis situations.
  • An understanding of providing service to people with different learning abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in an applicable residential setting.
  • Demonstrated a good working knowledge of the technical details important to the functioning of group residences.
  • Compliance with the Assisted Living Registry (ALR) regulations, policies and procedures related to residential supportive recovery programs.
  • Demonstrated the ability to teach skills and work effectively with others.
  • Knowledge of theory, principles, and practices in the fields related to the particular residence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to successfully complete a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Records Check.
  • Ability to successfully pass a reference check.
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Personal transportation that is in good repair, insured for business up to $1,000,000 for liability, and which can be used to transport clients.
  • Food Safe Certification or willingness to obtain certification within one month of employment.
  • Completion and documentation of a course, or a combination of courses, of at least 20 hours duration in one or more of the following subjects: counselling, crisis intervention and conflict resolution, psychosocial intervention for substance use disorders, trauma-informed practice, or willingness to obtain within three months of employment.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
  • Observe weekly hours limit if under a temporary or study visa.
  • Provide proof of eligibility if selected for the role.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to select amongst alternate courses of action to assist in the supervision of residence workers and to oversee the operation of residence in the supervisor’s absence.
  • Ability to assess clients’ practical needs and choose an approach using accepted procedures and techniques to assist residents in activities of daily living and provide life skills training.
  • Ability to schedule residence workers to provide coverage during periods of staff shortages, review work and provide input to performance evaluations.
  • Ability to facilitate participation and joint effort of residents and residence workers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide casework and support to residents to enhance their quality of life.
  • Ensure the orderly and safe operation of the facility.
  • Maintain the goals of supportive recovery and individualized service plans.
  • Provide operational guidance to residence workers.
  • Assist the Program Manager in providing orientation, training, work direction, and operational guidance to residence workers.
  • Clarify program policies and review work of residence workers.
  • Provide input to residence workers’ performance evaluations.
  • Participate in the assessment, goal setting, and program planning (Personal Service Plan) for individuals living in a residence.
  • Document, implement, and provide input into the evaluation of the program.
  • Observe residents and document any medical, behavioural, or other issues of concern; communicate observations to relief staff and management.
  • Interview clients to prepare care plans and background information.
  • Implement the service plan established for each resident.
  • Meet with each resident on a routine basis to discuss progress and plan future interventions.
  • Identify potential problems and report any difficulties, concerning/unsafe resident behaviours, and facility/equipment issues.
  • Use professional judgment to ascertain and apply appropriate intervention techniques with residents in crisis.
  • Participate in social, recreational, employment, educational, and other programs as appropriate to assist the resident’s service plan.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of the resident’s progress and make written and oral reports.
  • Maintain client files including statement of goals, summaries, case notes, reviews, discharge reports, and other relevant documentation.
  • Develop and maintain an in-house resource area containing current information/brochures of programs and services.
  • Ensure residents are in compliance with the terms of their residency and are aware of the rules of the facility.
  • Act as an on-site advocate for each resident.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living; encourage and support residents to live fully and independently as possible; provide emotional, organizational, and practical support.
  • Promote healthy choices with regards to daily living and provide guidance and assistance where appropriate, including encouragement of resident personal hygiene, laundry, cooking and cleaning.
  • Provide emotional support and feedback to residents and their families.
  • Support residents towards integration with the community.
  • Act as a positive role model for clients, providing life skills training and behaviour management as appropriate.
  • Dispense and ensure the taking of medications as required.
  • Provide transportation and assist residents to attend appointments.
  • Assist in orienting residents, including providing information regarding daily operations, commitments, and protocols relating to safety, building maintenance, and daily operations.
  • Assist the Integrated Substance Use Coordinator with the preparation or implementation of recovery programming or other activities.
  • Work with volunteers to support and enhance the goals of the residence programs.
  • Identify social, economic, recreational, employment, and educational services in the community that will meet the needs of the client.
  • Maintain effective liaison with other agencies, professionals, government officials, and the community.
  • Supervise the activities of the residence, its residents, and volunteers while on shift including maintaining case notes and other documentation.
  • Monitor and ensure safe, effective operation of the facility including quality control concerning cleaning equipment, indoor and outdoor maintenance, inventory, and food storage.
  • Oversee and support residents with meal scheduling, preparation, and clean up; monitor food inventory.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the residence by adhering to safety protocols and procedures; act safely in response to resident disturbances, unwelcome visitors, wellness checks, critical incidents, and emergencies.
  • Perform and record light janitorial duties, including the maintenance of clean indoor and outdoor common areas and ensuring rooms are prepared for new residents.
  • Responsible for the weekly grocery shopping for the residence and involve residents in this process.
  • Assist with the details of the operation of the facility, including administrative support.
  • Accompany residents to appointments and community outings, following any restrictions imposed by the courts/review panels.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation, available 24 hours/day to respond to incidents or emergencies, or to schedule coverage.
  • Participate in staff and resident/staff meetings.
  • Assist with the orientation and training of new staff and volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
