Senior Research Scientist, Quantum Demonstration Workflows, Quantum AI

Google•Los Angeles, CA
•$174,000 - $252,000

About The Position

As a Research Scientist at Google, you will work on research projects spanning fundamental research, product innovation, product contribution, and infrastructure. The role involves setting up large-scale tests, quickly deploying promising ideas, managing deadlines and deliverables, and applying current theories to develop products, processes, or technologies. You will contribute to the research community by sharing and publishing findings, drawing on internal projects and collaborations with universities and technical institutes. In Google Quantum AI, you will pioneer techniques, interfaces, and technology stacks for running complex quantum applications, including quantum error mitigation, on Google’s quantum processors. Bridging theoretical protocols and physical execution, you will lead the development of robust workflow toolsets for flagship experiments. The role combines physical insight, quantum expertise, and collaborative software engineering to integrate methods into core workflows and help users advance quantum computing. Google Quantum AI’s mission is to build a large-scale quantum computer and enable solutions to classically intractable problems.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Quantum Information, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in scientific computing and theoretical or numerical modeling of quantum systems.
  • Experience in software development and prototyping for quantum hardware, using Cirq, Qiskit, or similar frameworks.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience contributing to or leading high-impact projects within large-scale industry or scientific collaborations.
  • Experience managing large-scale experimental data, including complex circuit-generation sweeps and job-execution management.
  • Familiarity with quantum error mitigation, characterization methods, or hardware-aware optimization techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to bridge theoretical research and experimental execution.
  • Track record in rapid prototyping and successfully transferring research technology to production-grade software teams.

Responsibilities

  • Drive prototyping and pathfinding for next-generation, reconfigurable quantum workflows used in quantum computing experiments on processors, including how computations are performed on real, noisy quantum processors.
  • Own the end-to-end mission from initial concept through validated experimental results.
  • Partner with Theory, Experiment, and Software Engineering teams to integrate complex quantum systems into a cohesive application stack, including components such as dynamical decoupling and quantum error mitigation.
  • Influence the long-term technical roadmap for quantum experiments, ensuring research breakthroughs translate into validated and scalable workflow tools.
  • Facilitate the transition of research prototypes into mature, useful workflow tools.
  • Set up large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas while managing deadlines and deliverables.
  • Share and publish research findings, including findings inspired by internal projects and collaborations.
