About The Position

Tanium is seeking an AI Research Scientist to lead AI design, prototyping, and experimentation across its products and solutions, reporting to the Sr. Director AI and Applied Research. The role collaborates with engineering, data science, product, and other cross-functional teams to design, develop, and evaluate AI and machine learning models for intelligent endpoint management and security solutions. It combines cutting-edge AI research with enterprise-scale cybersecurity applications and supports Tanium’s autonomous IT capabilities. This role follows Tanium’s hybrid schedule and currently requires employees to work in the office at least three days per week at one of these locations: Addison, Texas; Bellevue, Washington; Durham, North Carolina; Emeryville, California; or Reston, Virginia. Applicants must meet the U.S. citizenship, nationality, or residency requirements specified in the posting pursuant to the cited Department of Defense requirements. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience and at least one year of relevant applied machine learning, data science, or AI research experience, or equivalent demonstrated expertise. Tanium offers a stated annual base salary range of $143,000 to $219,000, equity awards, and a benefits package.

Requirements

Meet the stated Department of Defense eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen, national, or resident pursuant to 8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(20) and 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
At least 1 year of experience in applied machine learning, data science, or AI research, or equivalent demonstrated expertise.
Experience developing and deploying machine learning models for tasks such as classification, regression, or anomaly detection.
Experience working with large-scale datasets and the tools and techniques needed to process and analyze them efficiently.
Strong foundation in machine learning, data analysis, and statistics.
Proficiency in Python.
Familiarity with machine learning frameworks and libraries such as PyTorch, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, NumPy, SciPy, and pandas.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.

Nice To Haves

Experience in statistical modeling, anomaly detection, the internals of large language models (LLMs), or agentic AI systems.
Passion for technology, cybersecurity, and autonomous systems.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with data science and engineering teams to design and implement AI and machine learning algorithms that improve Tanium’s autonomous IT capabilities.
Develop and evaluate machine learning models for use cases such as anomaly detection, threat identification, and performance optimization.
Analyze large-scale endpoint data to extract insights and develop predictive models.
Contribute to designing and implementing data pipelines that efficiently process and analyze endpoint data at scale.
Conduct exploratory data analyses and develop visualizations to communicate findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders and inform product development decisions.
Document research methodologies, experiments, and results to expand Tanium’s internal knowledge base and support reproducibility.
Stay current with advancements in AI, machine learning, large language models, and endpoint management technologies, and incorporate relevant developments into research.
Partner with cross-functional teams to translate research findings into scalable product features and improvements.
