About The Position

University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) is seeking a Senior Research Medical Physicist to join the School of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology. Travel is limited to conferences, occasional off-site meetings, and access to external equipment or services as needed to fulfill contract-specific requirements. Requirements

  • Master's degree in a CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics program, preferably with focus on Radiation Oncology/Radiation Therapy physics.
  • Three (3) years of related experience with at least one (1) year in specialization or directly related field, preferably in Radiation Oncology or Radiation Therapy.
  • One (1) year of experience with work coordination, training, or direct supervision preferred.
  • Routinely necessary to lift equipment, phantoms, etc. weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Maintain precautions necessary for peripheral work with animals.
  • Training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials or radioactive materials.
  • Offer of employment may be contingent on applicant obtaining medical clearance by university approved medical staff.
  • Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.
  • Position may, at times, require employee to work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals or biological agents are present.
  • Employee is required to wear personal protective equipment and a respirator in certain circumstances.
  • Animal care environment with possible exposure to infectious diseases, radiation, and carcinogens.
  • May be required to work non-standard hours (evenings/weekends).

  • Evidence of academic dissemination in relevant fields—through publications, presentations, or equivalent outputs—is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with faculty members to support study design and research contract performance.
  • Manage billing and monitor budget for radiation services.
  • Support and/or co-author funding applications.
  • Drive research in the fields of medical physics and radiobiology.
  • Leverage subject matter expertise and technical skills in manufacturing, measurement science, coding/programming, and/or radiation transport simulations to find creative scientific solutions.
  • Design, test and validate custom phantoms, immobilization devices, and experimental radiation dose measurement protocols for study-specific irradiation procedures.
  • Train, supervise, and mentor support research staff, fellows and students.
  • Coordinate operational activities through delegation of assignments to achieve operational and research goals.
  • Develop and provide hands on training for imaging, treatment planning, irradiation and safety procedures for DTRS radiation services and independent radiobiology studies.
  • Lead radiation safety checks and monitoring as required for ionizing radiation producing equipment.
  • Coordinate personal dosimetry for DTRS and visiting investigators.
  • Participate in Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) and relevant sub-committee meetings as laboratory representative for radiation equipment and safety related activities.
  • Manage and oversee in vivo dosimetry procedures for radiation biology studies.
  • Lead and/or supervise regular calibration of the kilovoltage (KV) x-ray irradiators and dosimetry equipment.
  • Oversee all relevant irradiator and irradiation platform commissioning activities.
  • Design, qualify, implement, oversee, and maintain novel irradiation protocols for radiobiological studies.
  • Manage comprehensive quality assurance and maintenance programs for all radiation and dosimetry equipment, including but not limited to kV radiobiological irradiators, medical linear accelerators, and optically stimulated luminescence detector (OSLD) readers.
  • Maintain irradiator (kV and linear accelerator), dosimetry equipment, and irradiation procedure records in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Maintain QA, calibration, and irradiation procedure databases.
  • Review results of irradiations; oversee and perform data analysis.
  • Engage in all necessary technical communications and correspondence to support research activities.
  • Author and revise quality assurance and standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare manuscripts and scientific reports.
  • Maintain all documentation and records in compliance with GDP and GLP.
  • Deliver regular lectures to support the CAMPEP Accredited Certificate Program in Medical Physics.
  • Provide teaching support, and/or deliver guest lectures for medical physics and radiation oncology residents, the dosimetrist training program, and the department’s annual physics and radiobiology review courses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
