About The Position

A senior research assistant position is immediately available at the University of Arkansas in the area of characterization of biological materials. The individual will primarily make use of SEM, TEM, Confocal laser scanning microscope and a biological sample preparation lab which includes an ultramicrotome and a critical point drier. Individuals with experience in preparation of tissues for SEM or TEM are strongly encouraged to apply. The research assistant will be providing technical support to research groups investigating bio & nanomaterials. The instrumentation is part of a cross-disciplinary pole in nanotechnology in the Northwest Arkansas area. The individual will be expected to fulfill the following tasks: Train students and researchers on biological sample preparation for scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and confocal laser fluorescent microscopy Develop teaching laboratories for students and associates Troubleshoot and fix minor equipment problems Collaborate with other departmental researchers in the interpretation of images obtained from the microscopes, and contribute in the writing of publications. Keep the facility in compliance with Environmental Health and Safety Department. Stay up-to-date on the proper storage and disposal of chemicals and other lab waste. Be involved in tours of the facility, to educate U of A faculty/staff and other guests of the scientific services that our facility has to offer. Work with school districts for tour of the facility and sometimes visit the schools, to educate the students on the scientific research that is studied in our lab. Develop oral and written materials (powerpoints, flyers…) to promote the activities of the facility and that of the University. Contact public and private entities and sometimes visit them to inform, educate and promote the analytical techniques offered by our lab. Regular, reliable and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Requirements

  • A Masters degree in Biological Science or related fields
  • Two years’ experience working in an analytical lab with microscopes and sample preparation

Responsibilities
