About The Position

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine- Epidemiology and Public Health is currently seeking a Senior Research Analyst. This position is responsible for conducting advanced analysis and support for research programs to promote a culture of assessment and evidence-based decision-making. The Senior Research Analyst will compile and interpret research data, establish and maintain databases, develop quality assurance measures, and provide final interpretations. This role involves independently conducting complex research assignments, acting as a subject matter expert, and completing highly complex work critical to the department. The position requires originality and ingenuity in addressing broad assignments and projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Management, Social Science, Public Policy, Mathematics, Statistics, Health Science or Services or in a field of study related to the research.
  • Two (2) years’ related experience in a research environment required.
  • Knowledge of design of research studies and preparation of technical procedures and reports.
  • Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications.
  • Ability to provide theoretical, conceptual and writing support on research analysis and findings.
  • Knowledge of using measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments.
  • Skill in statistical programming, interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects and information obtained.
  • Ability to network with, and provide information to key groups and individuals.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to use a consultative approach to resolve issues in area of responsibility.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology or related field preferred.
  • Expertise in statistical applications such as SPSS, SAS, R, STATA, and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct advanced analysis and support for research programs to promote a culture of assessment and evidence-based decision-making.

  • Act in a lead role in the summation and preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and proposals by providing and presenting statistical information.
  • Review work of support staff and determine how analysis will be presented.
  • Communicate and provide updates regarding complex data collection, analysis, and reporting processes.
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentoring to less experienced personnel in qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Clean and standardize registry, EHR, claims, REDCap, or survey variables into a common analytic structure.
  • Build reproducible checks for missingness, duplicates, date inconsistencies, coding drift, implausible values, and refresh-to-refresh changes.
  • Implement study inclusion/exclusion criteria, derive exposures, outcomes, and covariates, and create frozen analytic datasets under investigator supervision.
  • Produce routine summaries of case counts, stage at diagnosis, screening uptake, treatment timing, follow-up completeness, or other operational epidemiology metrics by demographic and geographic subgroup.
  • Link cases to census tract or ZIP-level contextual variables.
  • Create a workflow to tag and summarize new papers by cancer site, exposure, outcome, population, and study design.
  • Support non-clinical use cases such as case abstraction prioritization, missing follow-up flagging, study accrual forecasting, or backlog monitoring.
  • Standardize Git-based project structure, code review norms, notebook templates, variable derivation logs, and handoff documentation across ongoing projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
