About The Position

The City of Carson is seeking a Senior Recreation Center Supervisor. This role is open internally to active full-time and part-time City of Carson employees who have been employed for a minimum of six months by the recruitment closing date. The ideal candidate is a confident, highly organized, hands-on recreation leader capable of managing people, programs, facilities, sports, permits, special events, and community challenges. This position requires maintaining high standards for safety, customer service, accountability, and park operations. There are two full-time vacancies with a 5/8 schedule, working Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., including a 1-hour unpaid lunch break. Work hours and schedules may be adjusted based on operational needs. This is a fully on-site position with no remote work option. Under the direction of the Recreation Program Manager, this role performs varied professional work supervising the operation of a major community recreation center with complex and high-volume activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation or related field.
  • Three (3) years of full-time, paid experience in recreation.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Experience and/or education in a related field may be substituted on a year for year basis.
  • Proof of education is required and must be attached to the application at the time of submission.
  • Knowledge of training and supervision principles.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of developing and organizing group recreational activities such as leagues, arts and crafts, clubs, special events and tournaments.
  • Knowledge of goals and objectives of assigned center.
  • Knowledge of program organization and development techniques.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies, and objectives.
  • Knowledge of general record keeping practices.
  • Knowledge of basic purchasing practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of community resources, needs, and limitations of citizens attracted to assigned center.
  • Knowledge of center organization, operations, policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of requirements for maintaining buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills, using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise recreational, social, and educational activities and personnel at a recreation center.
  • Ability to recruit volunteers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to perform public relations activities which promote center usage; involve the public in center activities.
  • Ability to monitor and prepare budget.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate personnel.
  • Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems and take effective corrective action.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; make effective oral presentations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
  • Enrollment in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice program.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and supervises a variety of recreational activities at a major recreation center.
  • Acts as liaison to the surrounding neighborhood to improve recreational programming and recommends new programs.
  • Coordinates activities of leagues and tournaments assigned to the recreation center.
  • Monitors registration of participants in programs.
  • Enforces rules and regulations to ensure the safety and welfare of participants; conducts routine inspections of facilities and equipment.
  • Assists in budget preparation and monitors recreation budget expenditures in specified areas; requisitions supplies and equipment.
  • Drafts promotional materials, correspondence, and reports.
  • Recruits seasonal, part-time, and volunteer staff; supervises, trains, and evaluates personnel.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions; provides information to and consults with the public.
  • Manages shelter management/disaster prevention at the assigned site.
  • Manages fund raisers and snack bar operations; reconciles bank statements.
  • Monitors and maintains workfair programs.
  • Monitors contract services provided by outside organizations for special events.
  • Supervises State licensed day care (Kids Club) programs for children 5-12; supervises staff and monitors guidelines under State regulation.
  • Works closely with the Sheriff’s department and gang task forces by monitoring and logging activity on a daily basis as well as meets and confers with Sheriff supervision personnel on a daily basis.
