About The Position

The Department of Philosophy at Stanford University seeks applicants for a senior appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The preferred area of specialty is moral, political, or social philosophy. Applicants must have demonstrated ability to maintain a world-class research program and a commitment to effective teaching and mentoring. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related field and will be expected to teach and advise students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The term of appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2027. While successful applicants will be home-based in the Department of Philosophy, teaching and service responsibilities will be divided equally between the home department and the Stanford Civics Initiative, an interdisciplinary program offering a Minor in Civic Thought and Practice. We seek applicants whose teaching and scholarship will support one or more of the four CTP Minor tracks (Civic History, Civic Thought, Constitution and Law, Political Economy) and whose approach to pedagogy is aligned with the Statement of Principles of the Alliance for Civics in the Academy. Successful applicants will also teach one course yearly in Stanford’s COLLEGE program for first-year students.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related field.

Benefits

• Salary range for Associate Professor: $128,992 - $159,907 for the academic year 2026-27.
• Salary range for Professor: $149,247 - $255,852 for the academic year 2026-27.
