About The Position

Hatch is seeking a highly motivated Senior Vehicle Electrical Engineer to join our North American Infrastructure division in the Vehicle Electrical group in our Los Angeles, CA office. This role involves developing technical specifications and conceptual designs for new and upgraded rail vehicles and their on-board systems. The engineer will participate in design review meetings, review electrical and electro-mechanical designs, and direct or participate in new equipment qualification efforts. This position also includes hands-on engineering work with rail transit vehicles, testing, investigating malfunctions, and assessing conditions, as well as mentoring junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in rail vehicle electrical systems (Streetcars, LRVs, Heavy Rail Transit Cars, Commuter Cars, Locomotives) design and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of core electrical engineering concepts (analog/digital circuit design, power engineering, networking/telecommunications, AC/DC motor theory, control systems, and software development EMI/EMC).
  • Familiarity with the APTA, FRA, IEEE, IEC/EN, NFPA, and other industry standards related to rail vehicle design.
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Transit Authority engineering and maintenance experience is a plus.
  • PE registration is desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop technical specifications and conceptual designs for the new and upgraded rail vehicles and the on-board systems.
  • Participate in the design review meetings and technical working sessions with the carbuilders and equipment suppliers.
  • Review electrical and electro-mechanical designs, prepare detailed descriptions of review findings.
  • Direct and/or participate in the new equipment qualification efforts at supplier facilities and on the trains including functional testing, electrical performance, environmental, and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Prepare and/or review rail vehicle and vehicle on-board systems test procedures.
  • Hands-on engineering work with the rail transit vehicles, including testing, investigations of equipment malfunctions, and condition assessments.
  • Mentor and educate junior engineers
