About The Position
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is seeking a Senior Quality Engineer to maintain and enhance quality for the SPARC Project. The role defines quality requirements for designs, oversees manufacturing and assembly processes, and ensures products meet design requirements. The engineer will work with Design, R&D, Supplier Quality, and Manufacturing and Assembly teams to develop risk-informed quality assurance controls that support the CFS mission.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Industrial, Material Science, or Manufacturing Engineering.
- Minimum 7 years of Quality Engineering experience in a mechanical assembly or equipment manufacturing environment.
- Experience with GD&T and metrology.
- Experience with CMM, Creaform, and laser scanners.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001-2015, Six Sigma, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Process Capability Analysis, PFMEA, Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and APQP.
- Knowledge of non-destructive evaluation methods, including dye penetrant, ultrasonic, computerized tomography, and X-ray.
- Knowledge of cryogenics.
- Experience with Minitab or JMP, MS Excel (including VBA), and MS Visio.
- Excellent communication and organization skills.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
- Willingness to travel or occasionally work required nights, weekends, or on-call.
- Ability to occasionally work long hours.
- Ability to perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods.
- Ability to work in a facility with industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
- Compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws is required.

Responsibilities
- Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to develop, define, and implement quality requirements for design, manufacturing, and assembly processes.
- Facilitate the creation and execution of PFMEAs, Control Plans, and Quality Plans for manufacturing and installation of SPARC subsystems.
- Develop measurement systems and inspection methods to verify manufactured components meet quality requirements.
- Oversee and lead disposition of Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and root cause and corrective action initiatives.
- Support supplier quality oversight and implement action plans when needed.
- Collect and statistically analyze manufacturing data using control charts, process capability studies, and Measurement System Analysis; escalate important findings to Operations.
- Support creation of detailed manufacturing instructions documenting quality-critical characteristics.
- Escalate manufacturing nonconformances, conduct 8D root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
- Develop quality requirements and inspection plans for assembly and commissioning activities, ensuring adherence to engineering requirements.
- Analyze and interpret manufacturing data to drive quality improvements.
- Provide oversight for high-priority project quality inspections.
