Senior Quality Engineer

TetraScience•Boston, MA
•$140,000 - $180,000

About The Position

TetraScience is hiring a Senior Quality Engineer to join squads building and delivering scientific use cases for a top-five global pharmaceutical customer. The engineer will typically be the sole quality engineer in a squad of developers, scientists, and data engineers, owning quality for assigned use cases end to end and signing off releases against criteria set by Compliance. The role is responsible for validating delivered work against documented customer requirements, ensuring the SDLC is followed in a validated environment, and building maintainable workflow-based automation across UI, API, and database layers. It also involves improving test coverage and cycle time, using AI tools appropriately in testing, contributing to verification of AI features, and raising testability and risk considerations early in development. The engineer will own performance, security, tenant-isolation, resiliency, functional, integration, and regression testing, using exploratory manual testing where appropriate. The role works directly with customer stakeholders and cross-functional, distributed teams, and requires independently planning and managing QE work, resolving blockers, and escalating issues when needed.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in quality engineering or SDET roles.
  • Demonstrated independent ownership of quality for a product area.
  • Strong knowledge of software QA methodologies, tools, and processes across the full SDLC in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Experience designing comprehensive test plans and test cases for evolving requirements and meticulously reporting test runs and defects.
  • Proficiency in Python, Java, or JavaScript.
  • Deep hands-on experience with Playwright or an equivalent tool for workflow-based end-to-end testing, including building automation frameworks.
  • Advanced SQL skills and a strong understanding of database systems for querying and verifying scientific data integrity and correctness.
  • Experience integrating tests into CI/CD pipeline stages and quality gates using GitHub Actions or an equivalent.
  • Practical experience using AI tooling to build automation, generate test cases, and improve quality processes, with sound judgment about AI output.
  • Experience with RESTful APIs, data pipelines, web applications, and microservices on AWS.
  • Experience with test management tools such as Jira and Zephyr Scale.
  • Experience producing and being accountable for release evidence in a validated environment, working to standards defined by Compliance.
  • Ability to learn scientific use cases and instruments well enough to judge whether outputs are correct.
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, a life science, or equivalent experience.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to data warehouse architectures such as Databricks.
  • A science background or experience with scientific instruments.
  • Willingness to learn enough about AI/ML to verify AI features in assigned use cases; deep AI/ML specialization is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Own quality for assigned use cases and exercise QE release sign-off authority, including withholding sign-off when criteria set by Compliance are not met.
  • Trace delivered work to documented customer requirements and ensure release evidence demonstrates that requirements are satisfied.
  • Ensure the SDLC is followed in the correct order, with requirements, design reviews, test evidence, and traceability in place in a validated environment.
  • Design, build, and maintain workflow-based automated tests across UI, API, and database layers using Playwright or a comparable framework.
  • Continuously improve test coverage, cycle time, and when quality information is available during development.
  • Use AI tools to build automation, generate and strengthen test cases, and improve quality processes; judge when AI-generated work is suitable as release evidence.
  • Help verify AI features by checking that evaluation thresholds were set in advance, test data was held out, and claims correspond to measured results.
  • Raise testability, failure modes, and risks early in development, using escape and defect patterns as evidence.
  • Own performance, security, tenant-isolation, and resiliency testing, including failure and degradation behavior, alongside functional, integration, and regression testing.
  • Perform manual and exploratory testing where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with scientists, data engineers, solution architects, product managers, and application developers across distributed teams, grounding testing in customer workflows.
  • Independently estimate, prioritize, and plan QE work; manage delivery, resolve blockers, and escalate appropriately.
  • Produce and take accountability for release evidence in a validated environment according to standards defined by Compliance.

Benefits

  • 100% employer-paid benefits for all eligible employees and immediate family members.
  • Unlimited paid time off (PTO).
  • 401K.
  • Company-paid life insurance and LTD/STD.
  • A culture of continuous improvement with opportunities to grow your career and receive coaching.
