About The Position

Scientific Applications & Research Associates, Inc. (SARA) is seeking a Senior Pulsed Power Engineer for its High Power Electromagnetics Division in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The role supports rapid research and development activities for programs serving the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and their contractors. The engineer will work with engineers, physicists, and technicians across multidisciplinary teams, contributing to projects from conception through implementation and potentially leading other engineers. The work focuses on pulsed power systems and drivers, RF systems, power electronics, high-speed diagnostics, and high-voltage insulation. It involves equipment operating from 1 to hundreds of kilovolts and from 60 Hz to 10 GHz. The role calls for a strong grounding in electromagnetic and power electronics theory, along with required hands-on hardware experience. Significant travel may be required, including trips lasting two to three weeks several times per year.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • 10–12 years of experience in pulsed power, power electronics, high-power solid-state switching, applied electromagnetics, or high voltage (1 to hundreds of kilovolts).
  • Hands-on experience with hardware.
  • Knowledge and experience in detailed design and analysis of high-power switching technologies, pulsed forming networks, high-voltage insulation, compact and repetitive pulsed power systems, SPICE simulation, and protection and filtering circuits.
  • Ability to clearly communicate experimental procedures, data, and analyses in writing and deliver technical briefings face to face.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with others, multitask, and manage time effectively to meet project objectives.
  • Experience using basic data acquisition equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, voltage probes, current probes, and spectrum analyzers.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.
  • Ability to perform light physical effort, including standing, sitting, using hands, and carrying or lifting up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • 16 or more years of experience in power electronics, pulsed power, high-power microwaves, high-power RF, EMI protection, high-power solid-state switching and packaging, power conditioning, DC-DC and AC-DC power conversion, high voltage, protection circuits, high-speed communication circuits, digital and analog controls, power magnetics, gate drives, I/O interface circuits and control hardware, and system-level design and integration.
  • Experience with pulsed power technologies such as Marx generators, pulsed forming networks, inductive voltage adders, linear transformer drivers, and accelerators.
  • Experience with FDTD electromagnetic and multiphysics simulation codes, preferably COMSOL Multiphysics Simulation Software.
  • Experience with data processing software including Excel, MATLAB, Python, Mathcad, and Origin.
  • Experience writing technical and cost proposals.
  • Active DoD TS or DoE Q clearance.
  • Experience in power electronics, capacitor chargers, electromagnetics, microelectronics, and thermal design.

Responsibilities

  • Support rapid research and development activities in pulsed power and high-power electromagnetics.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary engineering projects from conception through implementation.
  • Lead engineers in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Design and analyze high-power switching technologies, pulsed forming networks, high-voltage insulation, compact and repetitive pulsed power systems, SPICE simulations, and protection and filtering circuits.
  • Communicate experimental procedures, data, and analyses in writing and deliver technical briefings.
  • Use data acquisition equipment to conduct measurements and support experiments.
  • Travel as needed for project work.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance, plus other supplemental programs.
  • Generous PTO program, including vacation, sick, and holiday time.
  • Tuition and certification reimbursement.
  • Flexible work schedules.
  • Discretionary employee bonuses.
