About The Position

Scientific Applications & Research Associates, Inc. (SARA) is seeking a Pulsed Power Engineer for its High Power Electromagnetics Division in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The role supports rapid research and development activities and contributes to long-term and new programs for the DoD, DoE, and their contractors. The engineer will collaborate with engineers, physicists, and technicians in a multidisciplinary environment, contributing across work from conception through implementation and potentially leading engineers and projects. The work focuses on pulsed power systems and drivers, RF systems, power electronics, high-speed diagnostics, and high-voltage insulation. Equipment may involve voltages from 1 to hundreds of kilovolts and frequencies from 60 Hz to 10 GHz. The position requires a solid grounding in electromagnetic and power electronics theory and application, as well as vital hands-on hardware experience. The engineer will design and analyze high-power switching technologies, pulsed forming networks, high-voltage insulation, compact and repetitive pulsed power systems, SPICE simulations, and protection and filtering circuits. Significant travel may be required, including trips lasting two to three consecutive weeks a few times per year. The work environment is indoors, moderately quiet, reasonably clean, well-lighted, and well-ventilated; moderate physical hazards may exist. Physical effort is light and includes standing, sitting, and using hands while performing duties, with carrying or lifting up to 50 pounds. Applicants must be U.S. citizens able to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • 2–4 years of experience in pulsed power, power electronics, high-power solid-state switching, applied electromagnetics, or high voltage (1 to hundreds of kilovolts).
  • Solid foundation in electromagnetic and power electronics theory and application.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware.
  • Experience and knowledge in detailed design and analysis of high-power switching technologies, pulsed forming networks, high-voltage insulation, compact and repetitive pulsed power systems, SPICE simulation, and protection and filtering circuits.
  • Ability to clearly communicate experimental procedures, data, and analyses in writing and deliver technical briefings face to face.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with others, multitask, and manage time effectively to meet project objectives.
  • Experience using basic data-acquisition equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, voltage probes, current probes, and spectrum analyzers.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.
  • Ability to meet the stated physical demands, including carrying or lifting up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • 6–8 years of experience in power electronics; pulsed power, including Marx generators, pulsed forming networks, inductive voltage adders, linear transformer drivers, or accelerators; high-power microwaves; high-power RF; EMI protection; high-power solid-state switching and packaging; power conditioning; DC-DC and AC-DC power conversion; high voltage; protection circuits; high-speed communication circuits; digital and analog controls; power magnetics; gate drives; I/O interface circuits and control hardware; or system-level design and integration.
  • Experience with FDTD electromagnetic and multiphysics simulation codes, preferably COMSOL Multiphysics Simulation Software.
  • Experience with data-processing software including Excel, MATLAB, Python, Mathcad, and Origin.
  • Experience writing technical and cost proposals.
  • Active DoD TS or DoE Q clearance.
  • Experience in power electronics, capacitor chargers, electromagnetics, microelectronics, or thermal design.
