About The Position

Northback is seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer with a background in water management to join their team in their Crowsnest Pass office. This role will contribute to the development of the Grassy Mountain steelmaking coal project. Reporting to the VP Technical Services, the Senior Project Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the successful execution of the Grassy Mountain engineering contract packages. Immediate duties will include the coordination of the technical content of the Environmental Impact Assessment, management of Trade-Off study phase deliverables and planning future engineering and procurement activities. This role will continue through the tendering, pre-construction, construction, commissioning, and project close-out periods and transition into Operations as a Project Engineer delivering the sustaining capital program of works. An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test.

Requirements

  • Professional Engineer registered in Canada and eligible for registration in Alberta
  • Minimum 7 years of project engineering experience in large mining or oil and gas-related capital projects
  • Experience in water management is essential to the role
  • Contract administration experience and sound problem-solving skills
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Proficient computer skills, including; MS Office
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to perform duties in a fast-paced, interactive environment
  • Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to assess information, problem-solve and make good decisions
  • Strong attention to detail

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to run GoldSim water management software is considered an asset
  • Experience in coal projects is considered an asset
  • Experience in Quality Management and Environmental Management or exposure is desirable
  • AutoCAD (not required but considered an asset)

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of water management structures and facilities through study phase(s), design, construction, commissioning and handover to operations
  • Coordinate geochemistry, hydrology, hydrogeology, water balances and water treatment disciplines (both active and passive)
  • Participate in the monitoring of water management system performance during operations, so as to be able to advance adaptive management solutions
  • Assist in the production / finalization of EIA technical documentation
  • Assist in the delivery of Trade-Off study phase and subsequent study phase
  • Provide oversight and coordination of the capital, sustaining capital, operating and closure cost estimates both internally and by the third-party estimating groups
  • Review status reports from various consultants and provide consolidated updates in the form of monthly reports, steering committee updates, and Board of Directors package assembly
  • Provide technical support for resolution and tracking of project issues
  • Prepare procurement scopes, assist with bid packages, and manage evaluation, award, delivery and closeout
  • Coordinate with Northback technical, environmental, site and management teams
  • Define new package scopes, develop project and construction execution plans and actively participate in project meetings
  • Build strong, positive owner/consultant and owner/contractor relationships based on regular and clear communication
  • Ensure that project management processes including change management processes are implemented and managed in accordance with project systems and procedures and good industry practice
  • Assist with study reconciliations and ‘what-if’ analyses
  • Support the development and preparation of project-related permits and provide technical support for follow-on clarifications
  • Assist in Operational Readiness until transition from WMS handover to Sustaining Capital Works is complete
