About The Position

Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory supporting national security, energy innovation, and environmental stewardship, is seeking a skilled Pressure Protection Program Engineer. This position also serves as the Facility Pressure Protection Coordinator, providing direct oversight, configuration control, and technical authority for pressure systems within designated SRNL facilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of engineering experience with pressure systems, piping design, or pressure safety programs.
  • Strong working knowledge of ASME B31.3 and pressure system design principles.
  • Familiarity with ASME BPVC, API standards, and additional piping codes.
  • For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is Legally Required
  • Experience with relief device sizing, fluid mechanics, and mechanical stress analysis.
  • Ability to interpret and apply engineering codes, standards, and DOE directives.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with DOE facilities, nuclear environments, or national laboratories.
  • Knowledge of DOE O 420.1C, DOE O 414.1D, DOE O 433.1B, and related DOE orders.
  • Experience with hazard analysis techniques (PHA, HAZOP, FMEA).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Facility Pressure Protection Coordinator, responsible for maintaining facility level pressure system oversight, including system status tracking, equipment configuration control, pressure relief device stewardship, walkdowns, and coordination with operations and maintenance.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for pressure systems governed by ASME B31.3, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), SRNL and DOE requirements.
  • Ensure pressure system design, installation, modification, and operation comply with 10 CFR 851.
  • Maintain and implement SRNL’s Pressure Protection Program, ensuring alignment with applicable national codes and standards.
  • Perform, review and approve engineering designs, calculations, P&IDs, drawings, material specifications, and inspection/test plans.
  • Perform and document engineering analyses such as stress evaluations, pressure boundary assessments, and relief device sizing in accordance with ASME and DOE standards.
  • Lead or participate in hazard analyses, design reviews, and facility walkdowns to assess system condition, operability, and compliance.
  • Provide technical guidance on pressure system fabrication, installation, testing, and inspection consistent with B31.3 DOE Orders and SRNL requirements.
  • Support nonconformance resolution, corrective action development, and lessons learned program activities.
  • Deliver training and mentorship on pressure system safety, DOE regulations, and SRNL pressure protection requirements.
  • Interface with DOE representatives, facility operations, maintenance, and engineering organizations regarding pressure safety matters.
