The Senior Program Coordinator for Vanderbilt Student Volunteers of Science (VSVS) is responsible for the community outreach programming for Metro Public Schools. This role involves hiring student volunteers who assist in the VSVS lab and also travel to designated Metro Public Schools to help with STEM-focused projects. The coordinator manages all logistics for four VSVS programs (Local Classroom Program, Rural Outreach Program, Local Outreach Program, and at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital), as well as HHPH (Hip Hop Public Health) and STEM Speaks. VSVS is a service organization comprised of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students dedicated to delivering inquiry-based, hands-on science lessons to elementary and middle school students. VSVS partners volunteers with teachers in grades 5-8 in the Metro Nashville Public School System. The organization also offers a STEM outreach program to rural counties for grades 6-8, sponsored by the Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE), and collaborates with other Vanderbilt programs and the Monroe Carel Jr. Children’s Hospital to provide science and health lessons. VSVS has developed middle school lessons aligned with Tennessee Academic Standards for Science for use in Davidson County.
