About The Position

This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin’s mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. As part of the Solar Center of Excellence (SCOE), the engineer owns process and automation engineering work that develops the SPM production line from installed equipment into a stable, controlled, MES-integrated manufacturing process. The role works hands-on through equipment commissioning, PLC/MES integration, and SOP development, then carries that ownership into sustaining engineering and process improvement once the line is operational. The position connects the NPI Systems Engineer, who owns the value stream as a system, with process and GSE engineers who own individual equipment areas. It supports line execution during design, delivery, and commissioning, and transitions from implementation support toward full sustaining and process-improvement ownership as production progresses from low-rate commissioning to full-rate production. Relocation is provided. Travel is expected, up to 25% at peak and 10% on average. Interviews include a technical assessment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 7 years of experience in process engineering, manufacturing engineering, or automation/controls engineering in a high-volume production environment.
  • Hands-on experience with PLC programming/integration and interfacing production equipment with a Manufacturing Execution System (MES).
  • Demonstrated experience developing SOPs, work instructions, or control plans for equipment and processes in active production.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving production equipment or process issues on the production floor, not only in a design or laboratory setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience commissioning internal and vendor-supplied production equipment, including working directly with equipment vendors on-site and with internationally sourced equipment.
  • Familiarity with MES architecture or implementation for a production line, including data schema, equipment interlocks, and traceability.
  • Experience carrying a production line from NPI/commissioning into sustaining engineering ownership.
  • Experience with SPC and process capability analysis, gauge R&R, PFMEA, and control plans.
  • Experience with spacecraft solar arrays, photovoltaics, deployment mechanisms, or comparable high-reliability precision assembly; this is a plus, not a requirement.
  • Familiarity with AS9100, ISO 9001, or other production quality systems.
  • Experience in semiconductor, battery manufacturing, medical device, automotive, or comparable high-volume industries is encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Support the NPI Systems Engineer with SPM line design, delivery, and commissioning by translating system-level requirements such as capacity, takt, and capability targets into implementable equipment configurations and process parameters.
  • Develop and own Standard Operating Procedures and work instructions for the SPM line, from cell intake through PVA build, as equipment arrives and processes are proven out.
  • Serve as the process engineering counterpart to the MES buildout, using PLC and controls experience to ensure production requirements—including yield tracking, traceability, in-process test data, and equipment interlocks—are addressed before the line goes live.
  • Own or support process improvement after equipment begins arriving and running, investigate yield loss and equipment or process issues on the production floor, and incorporate proven changes into SOPs and control plans.
  • Partner with equipment vendors and Manufacturing Engineers during on-site commissioning to validate process capability against line rate targets and first-pass yield targets.
  • Transition from implementation support toward sustaining and process-improvement ownership as the line moves from commissioning to operational status and full-rate production.
  • Flag production-consequence issues early enough to influence equipment and process specifications still in development, in collaboration with the NPI Systems Engineer and process/GSE engineers.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Up to four weeks of paid time off per year, based on weekly scheduled hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Relocation assistance.
  • Depending on role type and job level, potential benefits and bonuses based on individual contributions and company results; amounts and eligibility are not guaranteed.
