The engineer works on interdisciplinary teams with chemical engineers, materials scientists, colloidal physicists, and waveform designers. The position also supports technology transfer from early-stage research through development and collaborates with the international manufacturing team on long-term manufacturing needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a related technical field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant industry experience in coating, lamination, roll-to-roll processing, thin films, web handling, converting, or related process development.
  • Hands-on experience developing, optimizing, or scaling manufacturing processes.
  • Strong understanding of fluid dynamics and demonstrated use of that knowledge to improve formulations and processes.
  • Experience with one or more coating or lamination technologies, such as slot die, gravure, blade coating, or multilayer lamination.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to plan and execute technical projects, set priorities, and work independently in a fast-paced research and development environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across R&D, engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and external partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and data-driven process optimization.
  • Familiarity with material and process characterization techniques, such as rheology, mechanical testing, film thickness, or other relevant measurements.
  • Prototyping experience, 3D CAD, and tool design and fabrication.
  • Experience designing and implementing proof-of-concept and pilot equipment at different scales.
  • Knowledge of in-line inspection tools and automation.

Responsibilities

  • Design and prototype new approaches to roll-to-roll coating.
  • Lead the design, management, and coordination of experiments on pilot-scale roll-to-roll coating equipment.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in coating, lamination, and processing on interdisciplinary teams, leading and collaborating as needed.
  • Adapt existing equipment for new web paths and coating modules.
  • Develop creative approaches to challenging manufacturing problems.
  • Characterize and catalog coating results to drive process improvement.
  • Collaborate with and guide engineers and technicians, providing high-level troubleshooting expertise and issue reports.
  • Support technology transfer from early-stage research through development stages.
  • Collaborate with the international manufacturing team to support long-term manufacturing needs.
