About The Position

At General Motors, product teams create vehicles and experiences through human-centered design, with a focus on safer, smarter, and more connected mobility. The Senior Process Assurance Engineer – Stampings turns vehicle designs into production-ready stamped parts and dies, serving as the technical expert for assigned sheet-metal parts and processes from early design through die construction, tryout, vehicle launch, and production. The role works with product and manufacturing engineers, die designers and builders, suppliers, stamping plants, quality teams, and launch organizations to deliver parts meeting dimensional, surface-quality, formability, throughput, cost, timing, and production requirements. This is an individual-contributor position requiring hands-on stamping knowledge and the ability to lead complex technical issues to resolution. Occasional travel to plants, suppliers, tryout facilities, and other locations is required; nonstandard hours may be needed during launches and buyoffs. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role. Applicants must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future, including work authorization that requires company immigration support. Applicants may be required to complete role-related assessments and/or pre-employment screening, where applicable. General Motors offers opportunities to job seekers with disabilities and can provide reasonable accommodations during the job search or application process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field; or a high school diploma/equivalent plus a recognized tool-and-die apprenticeship or journeyman qualification.
  • Hands-on experience in stamping, tool and die, die engineering or construction, die tryout, formability, resident engineering, or stamping-plant manufacturing engineering.
  • Strong understanding of sheet-metal stamping, dies, presses, automation, part handling, and die-to-press interfaces.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, die layouts, process documents, technical specifications, and measurement results.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, critical characteristics, datums, dimensional requirements, and surface-quality requirements.
  • Strong technical analysis, problem-solving, planning, communication, presentation, and meeting-facilitation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with suppliers, plants, engineers, designers, skilled trades, and leaders while managing multiple programs, parts, suppliers, and deadlines.
  • English proficiency, willingness to travel occasionally, and ability to meet site safety and access requirements.
  • A valid driver’s license may be required for assigned travel.
  • Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with progressive, transfer, draw, line, trim, or pierce dies; advanced high-strength steel; or other challenging sheet-metal materials.
  • Experience with primary or secondary tryout, supplier die buyoff, dimensional measurement, scan data, surface evaluation, forming analysis, or springback correction.
  • Experience supporting vehicle launches, plant production, post-launch reviews, structured problem-solving, root-cause analysis, Lean manufacturing, or continuous improvement.
  • Experience developing design or process standards, technical checklists, or lessons-learned systems.
  • Ability to build collaboration, coach others, communicate with technical and nontechnical audiences, and share technical knowledge.
  • Initiative, ownership, integrity, sound judgment, accountability, and trust; takes intelligent risks to protect quality, timing, production, and customer requirements; turns lessons learned into practical improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical assurance for assigned stamped parts, dies, and manufacturing processes.
  • Provide design-for-manufacturing feedback and identify risks before die construction.
  • Review part designs, die concepts, process plans, drawings, measurement data, and technical documentation for manufacturability.
  • Evaluate forming, springback, surface quality, dimensional performance, materials, presses, automation, part handling, throughput, and die-to-press interfaces.
  • Guide suppliers and die builders through design reviews, construction, tryout, part evaluation, buyoff, and shipment readiness.
  • Coordinate actions across engineering, suppliers, tryout teams, stamping plants, quality, and launch teams.
  • Support tryout, build events, plant launch, production readiness, quality gates, and post-launch reviews.
  • Troubleshoot complex die, part, press, process, automation, material, dimensional, and surface-quality issues using measurements, scan data, samples, photos, observations, and engineering information.
  • Identify root causes; develop recovery plans, corrective actions, and follow-up plans; and drive issues to closure.
  • Respond to quality alerts and provide timely technical support when plant or customer requirements are at risk.
  • Review blanks and handling requirements, and coordinate technical maps documenting critical surfaces, datums, characteristics, and part requirements.
  • Track risks, decisions, timing, and actions; capture lessons learned; and apply them to future parts, dies, standards, and processes.
  • Travel to plants, suppliers, tryout facilities, and other locations as needed, including occasional nonstandard hours during launches and buyoffs.
