Ameresco is seeking an experienced Senior Power Engineer to support the development and execution of advanced thermal power generation projects across our energy infrastructure portfolio. This role will play a critical part in shaping project concepts, evaluating technology options, and supporting detailed engineering and construction readiness for power plants that support industrial, utility-scale, and behind-the-meter customers. The ideal candidate brings deep experience across multiple thermal prime movers—including reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICE), combustion gas turbines, combined cycle power plants, and fuel cells—and is comfortable interfacing with customers, internal development teams, OEMs, and third-party engineering firms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of industry experience in power generation, energy infrastructure, or industrial energy systems
  • Ability to review confidential US security information

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple thermal prime movers, such as: reciprocating engines, combustion gas turbines, combined cycle power plants, and fuel cell systems
  • Working knowledge of air emissions regulations, permitting considerations, and emissions control technologies
  • General understanding of power plant electrical distribution systems and grid interconnection concepts
  • Experience working with engineering firms, OEMs, and multidisciplinary project teams
  • Prior involvement in projects from conceptual development through construction
  • Ability to travel as required
  • Leadership, initiative, and problem-solving skills for large-scale projects
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience supporting behind-the-meter (BTM) or data center power projects
  • Familiarity with CHP, microgrids, or reliability-driven generation solutions
  • Experience evaluating availability, reliability, and redundancy strategies for mission-critical loads
  • Experience in design and calculation software (ThermoFlex, DesignBuilder, CAESAR II); MS Office

Responsibilities

  • Support project development teams by translating customer objectives into technically sound and constructible power plant concepts
  • Lead or support technology selection and configuration for thermal generation assets, including: Reciprocating engine plants Simple-cycle and combined-cycle gas turbine facilities CHP / cogeneration systems Fuel cell-based generation systems
  • Interface with third-party engineering firms (Owner’s Engineers, EPCs, and consultants) to define scopes of work, review designs, and ensure alignment with project objectives
  • Establish and maintain relationships with prime mover OEMs to understand: Product offerings and configurations Performance characteristics and operating envelopes Delivery schedules, availability, and long-term service considerations
  • Provide technical input on air permitting and emissions control strategies, including major source applicability, control technologies, and operational constraints
  • Support evaluation of power plant electrical systems, including: Generator configurations, response times, and islanding capabilities Medium- and high-voltage distribution Grid interconnection and protection philosophies (general knowledge level)
  • Review and contribute to technical due diligence, cost estimates, schedules, and risk assessments during project development
  • Support internal decision-making by clearly communicating technical tradeoffs, risks, and opportunities
  • Perform other duties as required.
