About The Position

Astro Mechanica is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer focused on power electronics and power systems development. The role involves designing high-performance, high-density, high-reliability power converters and owning their development across the full product lifecycle, from concept through delivery and operation. The engineer will support hardware prototyping, characterization, ground testing, and flight, and will collaborate with other engineering disciplines on high-power propulsion and generation systems. The work takes place in a fast-paced startup environment. The company may adjust the job level to match the candidate’s experience and responsibilities.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or PhD focused on power electronics, or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of experience designing, building, testing, and shipping power converters.
  • Ability to develop component and system trade studies amid substantial ambiguity.
  • Experience bringing at least two products through the full lifecycle, from concept to production.
  • Experience with high-voltage converters up to 1000V and/or high-power converters above 10kW.
  • Expertise in DC-DC and DC-AC power conversion topologies; high-frequency multilevel architectures are preferred.
  • Intimate understanding of electric machines and motor control methodologies.
  • Expertise in optimizing switching power loops to improve converter performance and minimize EMI.
  • Proficiency in circuit board layout for high-density converters.
  • Proficiency with analysis tools for simulating and optimizing circuit and system performance.
  • Proficiency in modeling time-domain dynamic circuit and system behavior.
  • Working understanding of structural and thermal considerations for power converters.
  • Experience automating hardware test and development functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-frequency multilevel power conversion architectures.
  • Experience with Altium for circuit board layout.
  • Experience with LTSPICE, PLECS, Simulink, or scripting for circuit and system analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high-performance, high-density, high-reliability power converters.
  • Own system trade studies, component selection, analysis, schematic capture, layout, bring-up, debugging, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Support hardware through prototyping, characterization, ground testing, and flight.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to design, develop, and optimize high-power propulsion and generation systems.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, including Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
  • 401(k) program.
  • Transparent stock option plan.
  • Self-managed and flexible time-off policy, including PTO, paid holidays, and sick time.
