Senior Power Electrical Engineer - Mission Systems Power Electronics (Onsite)

RTX•Cedar Rapids, IA
•$86,800 - $165,200•Onsite

About The Position

The Resilient Connectivity Products Hardware Technologies team is seeking a Senior Electrical/Power Engineer to develop power electronics for secure, high-speed communication systems across ground, airborne, and space platforms. The role contributes to mission-critical hardware for software-defined radios, high-bandwidth data links, and resilient communication networks. The engineer will design and guide power electronics—including closed-loop power supplies, EMI filters, and high-efficiency conversion stages—from concept through qualification. The work spans power conversion systems, magnetics, EMI mitigation, and power factor correction, with involvement throughout the hardware lifecycle. The engineer will work cross-functionally and contribute to pursuits, design, integration, verification, and factory transition, while delivering high-reliability aerospace hardware.

Requirements

  • Hands-on design expertise with power supply topologies such as buck, boost, flyback, forward, resonant, and PFC.
  • Strong understanding of power supply control schemes, including peak current mode and voltage mode control, and ability to design compensation, place poles and zeros, and evaluate converter stability.
  • Thorough understanding of EMC/EMI requirements, mitigation techniques, and designing power systems to meet regulatory standards.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB design for power supplies.
  • Ability to perform power electronics simulations.
  • Typically requires a STEM degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in a related field and at least 3 years of experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government-issued security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Active and existing DoD Secret clearance required after day 1.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience across a range of power levels and switching frequencies in DC/DC and AC/DC power conversion.
  • Power supply design experience from 10 W to multi-kW.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to explain complex technical concepts to varied audiences.
  • Expertise in digital control, complex topologies such as phase-shifted bridge or LLC, and designing overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent protection features.
  • Experience selecting COTS magnetics and designing custom inductors or transformers when needed.
  • Proficiency selecting and integrating power components with consideration for thermal stress, derating, and overall thermal management.
  • Active SECRET clearance or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of power electronics hardware, including DC/DC and AC/DC converters, motor controllers, and power supplies.
  • Perform circuit analysis, modeling, simulation, and component selection aligned with system requirements.
  • Generate engineering documentation, including requirements, design descriptions, schematics, bills of materials, and test plans.
  • Support integration, verification, validation, and qualification testing of new and existing designs.
  • Partner with Systems, Mechanical, Software, Manufacturing, and Digital Hardware teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues involving power conversion performance, reliability, EMI/EMC, and thermal behavior.
  • Ensure adherence to aerospace standards and mission assurance expectations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support a culture of technical excellence.
