Power Electrical Engineer II - Mission Systems (Onsite)

RTX•Cedar Rapids, IA
•$68,900 - $131,100•Onsite

About The Position

The Resilient Connectivity Products (RCP) Hardware Technologies team is seeking a Power Electrical Engineer II to develop power electronics for secure, high-speed communication systems used on ground, airborne, and space platforms. The engineer will work on mission-critical hardware including software-defined radios, high-bandwidth data links, and resilient communication networks. The role spans closed-loop power supplies, EMI filters, high-efficiency conversion stages, magnetics, EMI mitigation, and power factor correction (PFC), guiding designs from concept through qualification. The engineer will apply knowledge of power supply control schemes and topologies to deliver high-reliability aerospace hardware. Responsibilities span design, integration, verification, qualification, and factory transition, in collaboration with cross-functional partners. The position is onsite, with potential locations in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, or Fort Wayne, Indiana. An active and existing security clearance is required after the first day.

Requirements

  • Hands-on design expertise with power supply topologies such as buck, boost, flyback, forward, resonant, and PFC.
  • Strong understanding of power supply control schemes, including peak current mode and voltage mode control, with the ability to design compensation, place poles and zeros, and evaluate converter stability.
  • Experience in schematic capture and PCB design for power supplies.
  • Ability to perform power electronics simulations.
  • Typically, a STEM degree and at least 2 years of relevant prior experience, or an advanced degree in a related field.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government-issued security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Active and existing security clearance required after day 1.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience across a range of power levels and switching frequencies in DC/DC and AC/DC power conversion.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with digital control, complex topologies such as phase-shifted bridge or LLC, and protection features such as overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent.
  • Experience selecting appropriate COTS magnetics.
  • Familiarity with selecting and integrating power components while considering thermal stress, derating, and overall thermal management.
  • Active SECRET clearance or higher.
  • Experience using Siemens Xpedition Designer and Layout.
  • Experience using LTspice.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of power electronics hardware, including DC/DC and AC/DC converters, motor controllers, and power supplies.
  • Perform circuit analysis, modeling, simulation, and component selection in alignment with system requirements.
  • Generate engineering documentation, including requirements, design descriptions, schematics, bills of materials, and test plans.
  • Support integration, verification, validation, and qualification testing of new and existing designs.
  • Partner with Systems, Mechanical, Software, Manufacturing, and Digital Hardware teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Ensure adherence to aerospace standards and mission assurance expectations.
