Senior Platform Engineer
About The Position
Scalar is a small, ten-person team of engineers and designers focused on improving the API ecosystem. They aim to provide every company with Stripe-level documentation, SDKs, and MCP servers from day one. Open-source is central to their philosophy, with team members contributing to and maintaining key repositories in the API space, including OpenAPI. Scalar operates with a lean process, empowering engineers to identify problems, collaborate, and ship solutions autonomously. They are seeking individuals with high agency who thrive in environments with significant autonomy and minimal ego.
Requirements
- Experience owning production infrastructure in a startup or small team environment with a broad scope.
- Ability to understand system architecture end-to-end.
- Proficiency in a TypeScript-heavy stack, including infrastructure written in TypeScript.
- Experience running services on a cloud provider (GCP preferred) and understanding of serverless vs. long-lived VM trade-offs.
- Ability to make decisions and communicate them clearly.
- Collaborative approach to problem-solving with a focus on kindness and low ego.
Nice To Haves
- In-depth knowledge of GCP services (Cloud Run, Compute Engine, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, GCS, Secret Manager, Artifact Registry).
- Experience with Pulumi or other IaC tools using a programming language.
- Experience with multi-region deployment, autoscaling, and rolling updates.
- Track record of building internal developer tooling.
- Comfort with polyglot persistence, including MongoDB and PostgreSQL (with pgvector).
- An in-house-first development philosophy.
- Background in developer tools or APIs, with familiarity with OpenAPI.
Responsibilities
- Own the platform that underpins all Scalar products, including services, infrastructure, and internal tooling for Docs, SDKs, the API Client, and Agent Scalar.
- Enhance the speed and reliability of the platform to enable faster product shipping.
- Manage and develop infrastructure using TypeScript and Pulumi for infrastructure-as-code on GCP.
- Contribute to the development of Docs, including Markdown/MDX, OpenAPI/AsyncAPI references, Git sync, and AI chat.
- Develop SDK generation for multiple languages (TypeScript, Python, Go, PHP, Java, Ruby) with automated GitHub sync.
- Maintain and enhance the open-source API Client, a Postman alternative.
- Develop and manage Agent Scalar, including secure MCP servers and AI features.
- Manage the hybrid compute model using Cloud Run and Compute Engine managed instance groups.
- Implement and maintain infrastructure-as-code using Pulumi (TypeScript).
- Manage the eventing and async backbone using Pub/Sub, Cloud Tasks, and Cloud Scheduler.
- Oversee object storage and artifact pipelines on GCS.
- Develop and maintain the SDK generation pipeline.
- Ensure reliability, performance, and autoscaling as usage grows.
- Build and maintain internal tooling, including CLI toolkits, deploy pipelines, CI, and feature-flag systems.
- Implement and manage observability and operational health using Sentry, structured logging, and BigQuery analytics.
- Contribute to both backend service management and frontend development.
- Potentially lead the development of new features in either backend or frontend.
- Pitch in and help out where needed across the team.
