About The Position

This role is part of AtkinsRéalis Architecture & Design Canada Inc., bringing together expertise in architectural design and project delivery across Canada. We are seeking a Senior Planner and Urban Designer to help grow our planning, urban design, architecture, and master planning practice. This role is suited to a high-caliber professional with strong design judgement, planning expertise, market credibility, and the ability to build lasting client relationships. The role is central to design leadership, planning strategy, client growth, and proposal delivery. The successful candidate will bring strong experience in urban planning, urban design, community engagement, and multidisciplinary collaboration, with the confidence to lead complex assignments from early visioning through approvals, implementation, and delivery. This position can be based in either Vancouver, BC or Toronto, ON.

Requirements

  • A degree in Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, or a related discipline and a registered member with the Canadian Institute of Planners and a provincial planning institute.
  • 15+ years of experience in urban planning, urban design, master planning, or related city-building work, with demonstrated leadership on complex assignments.
  • Experience working with municipalities, public agencies, developers, institutions, and multidisciplinary consultant teams on complex projects.
  • Strong knowledge of planning policy, development approvals, urban design principles, public realm design, transit-oriented development, and implementation strategies.
  • Proven success in client development, RFP responses, proposals, interviews, presentations, and pursuit strategy.
  • Excellent written, visual, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex planning and design ideas into clear, compelling narratives.
  • Strong leadership, facilitation, mentorship, and relationship-building skills.
  • The judgement, presence, and professional maturity to help shape and grow a respected planning and urban design practice.

Responsibilities

  • Lead urban planning, urban design, and master planning assignments for complex public and private sector clients.
  • Develop planning and design strategies that support complete communities, transit-oriented development, placemaking, public realm quality, and long-term implementation.
  • Prepare and guide planning studies, urban design frameworks, development concepts, policy reviews, approvals strategies, and implementation plans.
  • Lead client and stakeholder engagement, including workshops, presentations, public consultation, and coordination with municipal and agency partners.
  • Support business development by identifying opportunities, building client relationships, and leading RFP responses, proposals, interviews, and pursuit strategies.
  • Mentor emerging planners and designers, and contribute to a strong, collaborative, and design-focused practice culture.
