About The Position

In addition to the responsibilities of the Planner, this mid-management position performs complex professional and technical planning duties. The Senior Planner has broad expertise in professional planning issues and varying job assignments. This classification is scheduled to receive a 4% salary increase effective July 1, 2026. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be utilized by other divisions or departments within the City. This position is part of the Planning Assistant - 3176, Planning Associate – 3177, Planner - 2587, Senior Planner - 2136, Principal Planner 2112 series. Experience gained in this position may serve to meet the minimum requirements to become a Principal Planner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in City Planning, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Historic Preservation, Sustainability/Environmental Studies, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Economics, Public Administration or a closely related field is required.
  • Six years of increasingly responsible professional experience in a public planning agency or a private firm with direct experience on public planning, environmental, historic, transportation or urban design/architectural issues are required.
  • A Master's Degree in City or Urban Planning, Architecture, Historic Preservation, Public Administration or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • California Class C Driver’s License is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional experience in Long Range Planning is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex professional and technical planning duties.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all employees, customers, vendors and other City departments.
  • Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
  • Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period.
  • Work the necessary hours and times, including overtime as authorized for non-management staff, to complete goals, tasks, and objectives.
  • Ensure the duties of the position are performed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Foster a teamwork environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Give and receive direction in English.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

  • Actively participate in maintaining a secure computing environment by adhering to and implementing City cybersecurity policies, procedures, and best practices. This includes understanding common cyber threats such as phishing and malware, and promptly reporting suspicious activities.
