About The Position

This role involves performing venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently, with a thorough knowledge of test requirements. The Senior Phlebotomist Processor will also assist in the Clinical Laboratory as needed. The position requires a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively under pressure. The individual will be responsible for maintaining specimen integrity, processing and handling specimens accurately and efficiently, and operating laboratory analyzers. Additionally, they will manage specimen requirements for reference labs, organize daily tasks, maintain a clean work area, and perform analyzer maintenance. Proficiency in using the LIS system for specimen tracking and ordering tests is crucial. The role also emphasizes contributing to a safe and secure environment, maintaining patient confidentiality, and adhering to professional standards and regulations, including OSHA guidelines. The ability to train on CBC and point-of-care equipment is also a key aspect of this position.

Requirements

1 year of experience as a phlebotomist
High School Diploma
Skillful and knowledgeable in all aspects related to drawing blood.
Experience with LIS system.

Responsibilities

Perform blood draws competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
Demonstrate knowledge of color top tube to use, volume of blood needed and test requirements.
Identify the patient by verifying patient information on the requisition with the patient using two patient identifiers (First and Last name & DOB).
Maintain specimen integrity by using proper aseptic technique, following department procedures, observing isolation procedures.
Ensure all aspects of processing and handling of all specimens ran in-house and referred out are carried out in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner.
Refer unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; maintaining unresolved orders.
Provide test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating hematology, urinalysis, and chemistry analyzers.
Research specimen requirements for reference labs and arrange for critical specimen handling and complex transportation arrangements when needed.
Consistently determine proper priorities when organizing daily tasks and adjust schedule in view of STAT's, out-patients, and time draws.
Keep work area clean and stocked properly with all needed supplies.
Perform needed maintenance on analyzers and document properly on analyzer logs.
Maintain all daily logs.
Track collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
Appropriately document using the LIS system all specimens collected and appropriately order the testing according to the requisition from the ordering physician.
Recognize system failures, and inconsistent or erroneous patients results, and report these along with unusual test orders and communicate appropriately.
Organize work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and order.
Know and use proper reporting systems (including critical/panic results). Understand and utilize the LIS to ensure that the physician receives all reports and that all critical/panic reports are relayed without delay.
Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
Maintain patient confidence by keeping laboratory information confidential.
Adhere to professional standards, clinic policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements.
Proficiently understand Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.
Understand how to use an Eye Wash Station.
Understand and monitor Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
Ability to train on CBC and point of care equipment.
Work LIS pending list to completion daily.
Be flexible to travel and assist at other locations based on business needs and management direction.
