About The Position

This is a non-exempt version of the Sr Pathologist Asst role, intended for contingent and part-time associates whose weekly base salary is less than $455 due to FLSA regulations. The Sr Pathologist Assistant Part-Time/Contingent serves as a Pathologist extender for the department of Pathology. Responsibilities include case accessioning, gross description and sampling of tissue specimens, evisceration and protection of autopsies, compilation and dictation of preliminary autopsy diagnosis, preparation and collection of tissue for special studies, evaluation and sampling of tissues for frozen sections, cutting, staining, and cover slipping of frozen section tissue, photographing surgical autopsy cases, opening/selection of tissue for The Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN), maintaining supplies, disposal of old specimens, identification and resolution of labeling discrepancies, training of PA I's, and assistance with procedural writing and updates. All tasks are performed with a degree of supervision determined by the Pathology Physician Assistant or the Pathologist in charge of the gross room.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree (Required)
  • Post Baccalaureate degree in Biology, Zoology, Pathology, Medicine and one year acceptable Experience as a Pathologist Assistant, which included grossing of specimens at all complexity levels and under the direct/indirect supervision of a certified Pathologist; or two to four years related Experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and Experience.
  • OR Bachelor's degree (B. A. /B. S. ) from four-year college or university in Biology/Zoology and three years acceptable Experience as a Pathology Assistant which included grossing of specimens at all complexity levels and under the direct/indirect supervision of a certified Pathologist; or one to two years related Experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and Experience.
  • OR successful completion of course requirements from accredited school of Histotechnology, HT (ASCP) Certification and Associate degree, or Associate degree with HT (ASCP) Certification plus additional courses in Anatomy and Physiology. Plus five years acceptable Experience which included grossing of specimens at all complexity levels and under the direct/indirect supervision of a certified Pathologist.
  • Highly skilled communicator with Pathologists and other Physicians regarding specimen processing for frozen section, gross pathology, and/or autopsy pathology.
  • Attention to detail to recognize important and subtle gross abnormalities and knowledge of how to submit these in sections to arrive at proper diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of Windows 95 computer, Word 2000, Tamtron and/or other computer based lab information system.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluation and gross dissection of all specimens at all complexity levels, including accurate description/dictation, identification, sectioning, and cosseting of the specimen.
  • Assistance in gross room frozen section preparation, including evaluating and selecting tissue for frozen section diagnosis, performing slide preparation (freezing, cutting, staining, cover slipping), and preparing/staining alcohol/air-dried touch preps.
  • Processing special study tissue (e.g., ER/PR, Lymphoma, Chromosome analysis) when needed.
  • Performing autopsy functions including identification, external examination, evisceration, prosection, dictating gross findings, preparing preliminary autopsy diagnosis, closing body cavities, and cleaning the autopsy suite according to safety and infection control procedures.
  • Maintenance of the Gross Room, ensuring instruments are sharp, workstations are stocked, machines are in good working order, supply inventory is optimal, and general cleanliness is preserved.
  • Performing miscellaneous assigned tasks such as photographing surgical specimens, assisting with CAP standards, tissue disposal, observing safety precautions, file correlation, troubleshooting, accessioning, and preparing conference case material.
