About The Position

The Biosafety Specialist under the supervision of the Biosafety Officer(s) is responsible for contributing to the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of the comprehensive Biological Safety Program for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or other appropriate fields. With three (3) years of experience in occupational health and safety, experience in biosafety
  • Associate’s degree Microbiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or other appropriate field. With five (5) years of experience in occupational health and safety, experience in biosafety.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize a computer, Microsoft Office, Muse or other laboratory management system, and other software.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to work cooperatively with and train a wide variety of university administrators, staff, researchers, and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to wear proper PPE, including, but not limited to, respiratory protection.
  • Must be successful in obtaining security risk assessment approval as specified in the Select Agent regulations.
  • Must be able to receive medical clearance for respiratory protection, including N95 and powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR).

Responsibilities

  • Support management of the Federal Select Agent Program laboratory, serving as Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) and secondary contact for BSL-3 spaces.
  • Assist with institutional biosafety and compliance programs, including training development, staff education on biological hazards, and response protocols for spills or exposures.
  • Conduct inspections and audits of BSL-1, BSL-2, and BSL-3 laboratories; maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Assist in developing and updating biosafety policies, SOPs, and documentation; support staff and investigators with regulatory guidance and risk assessment.
  • Provide administrative support to the Institutional Biosafety Committee and participate in required inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
