About The Position

BAE Systems is recruiting for a passionate safety professional to join their dedicated Safety, Health and Environmental team. As a Senior Occupational Safety Specialist, the role involves improving Health and Safety Programs at the San Diego shipyard site, reporting to the Site Safety Manager. The position partners with management, staff, and employees to promote and support a safety culture through the Safety Management System (SMS). Key responsibilities include developing strategies to mitigate risks from workplace hazards, leading incident investigations, completing customer incident reporting forms, coordinating safety incident response, and communicating findings and recommendations to leadership and subcontractors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related discipline, and four years’ experience applying safety processes in an industrial environment, or the overall equivalent.
  • Knowledge of Safety and Health regulations and modern safety management principles.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply incident investigation and causal analysis methodology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management, especially during high-stress incidents and emergency situations.
  • Ability to act independently to quickly recognize when issues need to be elevated and additional support is required.
  • Able to support travel of up to 50%.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Experience with Process Safety Management
  • Management system experience (OSHA, ISO 45001)

Responsibilities

  • Partner with management, staff, and employees to promote and support a safety culture that prioritizes the well-being of all employees through our Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Develop strategies to remove or mitigate risks related to identified workplace hazards.
  • Lead incident investigations, collaborating with stakeholders to identify root causes, contributing factors and implement preventive measures.
  • Complete and submit customer incident reporting forms.
  • Coordinate and oversee proper safety incident response including evidence collection, preservation and documentation.
  • Communicate findings, trends, and recommendations to senior leadership and subcontractors to ensure that safety concerns are addressed promptly and effectively.
