About The Position

AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Senior Nuclear Engineer Energy to lead and support the execution, oversight, and coordination of nuclear engineering activities. This remote position is based out of the Oak Ridge, Tennessee office and focuses on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) designs. The role ensures technical deliverables, design interfaces, and nuclear safety information flow effectively across engineering disciplines, project functions, and potentially external vendors. The position integrates expertise in neutron and reactor core physics, nuclear safety and analysis, design and radiation shielding, fuel-cycle operations, radioactive-material transportation, and software quality assurance. The engineer will use validated neutronics methodologies and nuclear analysis tools, while applying applicable US and international regulatory frameworks, including NRC regulations, DOE requirements, and IAEA standards. The successful candidate will lead technical work supporting nuclear safety licensing, author and approve analyses and safety documentation, and lead criticality safety evaluations and analyses for fuel fabrication, handling, storage, and transportation. The role also includes establishing criticality safety limits and controls, maintaining the Criticality Safety Program, performing radiation shielding and transport analyses, and collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree; candidates with a master’s degree, Ph.D., or Professional Engineer (PE) license may be considered with 5 years of experience.
  • At least 7 years of engineering experience and a track record of reviewing, verifying, and formally approving other engineers’ technical work.
  • Experience authoring formal safety basis documents, calculation packages, or regulatory submittals.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of US and international nuclear regulatory frameworks, including NRC regulations, DOE orders, and IAEA safety standards and guides.
  • Knowledge of NRC regulations including 10 CFR Parts 50, 70, or 71, and ANSI/ANS-8 standards.
  • Experience working in integrated, cross-functional engineering teams and interfacing with other engineering disciplines.
  • Proficiency with nuclear analysis software such as Attila4MC, MCNP, SCALE, and/or Serpent codes and modules.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D.
  • Experience in the nuclear industry.
  • Direct experience modeling or licensing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) or advanced fuel systems, such as HALEU or TRISO fuel cycles.
  • Experience managing code verification, validation, and benchmarking under an ASME NQA-1 or equivalent nuclear quality assurance program.
  • Demonstrated experience authoring and approving NCSEs and NCSAs for fuel processing, storage, or transport.
  • Proven ability to design radiation shielding and perform complex radiation-transport and core physics calculations.
  • Advanced hands-on proficiency with MCNP and SCALE/KENO, or equivalent codes such as Attila4MC or Serpent.
  • Knowledge of DOE orders, guides, technical standards, and directives regarding nuclear facility safety bases.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate technical work supporting US nuclear safety licensing activities.
  • Author, review, and approve technical documentation, including nuclear safety analyses and evaluation reports.
  • Support licensing initiatives by assisting with the preparation of safety basis documents.
  • Participate in hazard analyses, process design reviews, and configuration management activities.
  • Lead, execute, and approve Nuclear Criticality Safety Evaluations (NCSEs) and Nuclear Criticality Safety Analyses (NCSAs) for fuel fabrication, handling, storage, and transportation processes.
  • Establish and validate criticality safety limits and engineered or administrative controls for small modular reactor systems.
  • Advance the development and maintenance of the Criticality Safety Program in alignment with ANSI/ANS-8 standards and applicable NRC and DOE regulations.
  • Apply validated neutronics methodologies and Monte Carlo codes to develop or assess margins to criticality, bias, and uncertainty.
  • Lead, perform, and approve radiation shielding designs and radiation-transport analyses for fuel fabrication, handling, storage, and transportation.
  • Analyze and interpret radiation data to ensure operational safety, shielding effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Review, verify, and formally approve technical work completed by other engineers.
  • Coordinate nuclear engineering activities and technical information across engineering disciplines, project functions, and potentially external vendors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
