Senior Network Engineer

Genentech•Hillsboro, OR

About The Position

The Senior Network Engineer is a technology-agnostic infrastructure expert who solves complex IT problems and makes critical technical decisions with considerable independence. The role influences technology strategy, mentors teams, and ensures technical designs and deliveries align with long-term organizational objectives and regulatory standards. The engineer leads design, implementation, and lifecycle management of resilient infrastructure solutions, with a focus on enterprise campus networking and the campus physical network footprint. This includes coordinating on-site technical support and vendor installation teams, automating repetitive tasks, managing network assets and hardware refreshes, and serving as an escalation point for critical network outages. The position works with business stakeholders, senior managers, vendors, service providers, architects, and distributed teams to translate business needs into network solutions and guide strategic decisions. It also supports project planning, cost optimization, compliance with quality and regulatory standards, and adherence to the organization’s Technical Architecture Framework.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a Business field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5–8 years of experience supporting and implementing complex data networks.

  • Experience building trusted partnerships with business stakeholders, translating complex business requirements into network solutions, and driving strategic alignment.
  • Advanced expertise in enterprise campus networking, including core/distribution/access switching, BGP/OSPF routing protocols, enterprise WLAN, NAC/802.1X, firewalls, and SD-WAN.
  • Knowledge of broader infrastructure domains such as platform, compute and storage, datacenter management, or network management.
  • Experience managing physical-layer infrastructure and campus server/MDF rooms, and supervising third-party contractors for physical rollouts and Hands & Feet activities.
  • Knowledge of multiple business areas beyond IT infrastructure and how infrastructure affects business processes.
  • Experience applying IT operations best practices in an always-up, always-available service environment.
  • Outstanding problem-solving and decision-making skills, including the ability to integrate advanced technological concepts into viable solutions.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and decisive during major outages or aggressive project deadlines.
  • Ability to track bills of materials, support project budget definition, and optimize operational costs.
  • Practical experience with IT service management tools for incident resolution, task tracking, and strict change control.
