About The Position

The Senior Network Engineer delivers reliable, secure, resilient, and continuously improving enterprise networking services that support the University's academic, research, administrative, and student success mission. As a senior technical member of Information Technology Services, this position designs, implements, operates, secures, and modernizes the University's physical and logical network infrastructure to keep it secure, scalable, highly available, and prepared for future needs. The role spans physical communications infrastructure, campus LAN and WAN services, enterprise routing and switching, wireless networking, data center networking, Internet connectivity, and hybrid cloud networking. It supports technologies including OSPF, BGP, EVPN/VXLAN, IPv4/IPv6, network segmentation, resiliency, and high availability. The engineer also develops secure connectivity across campus, cloud, IoT, and research environments, including Zero Trust networking, NAC, secure remote access, firewall integration, identity-aware networking, Azure, AWS, UMassNet, and Internet2. The position improves the networking environment through engineering practices, automation, lifecycle management, documentation, monitoring, observability, AI-assisted operations, and standards. It provides technical leadership for complex implementations, major projects, and critical incidents, while mentoring colleagues and evaluating emerging technologies. The role exercises substantial independent technical judgment within established ITS governance. This is primarily an on-site position requiring regular work across University campuses, including telecommunications rooms, data centers, classrooms, laboratories, lecture halls, residence halls, and other facilities. Limited remote work may be available under University policy and operational needs. The position involves hands-on infrastructure work, coordination with campus and external partners, participation in maintenance and emergency activities, and evening, overnight, weekend, and on-call work as operational needs require.
