Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 7 years of mortgage underwriting experience
  • Strong knowledge of agency and investor guidelines, residential and consumer loan products, banking regulations, lending compliance, and credit, income, asset, and collateral analysis.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills, with the ability to explain underwriting decisions, mentor underwriting and lending staff, and maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with loan origination systems (LOS), automated underwriting systems (AUS), and Microsoft Office applications
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing business needs, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field preferred.
  • FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and/or VA Staff Appraisal Reviewer/Lender Appraisal Processing Program (SAR/LAPP) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a resource for junior underwriters and lending staff by providing mentorship, training, and second-level reviews as needed.
  • Review and underwrite mortgage and consumer loan applications, including complex transactions, within delegated authority and analyze credit, income, assets, appraisals, title work, and supporting documentation to determine loan eligibility.
  • Ensure compliance with internal lending policies, investor and Government-Sponsored Enterprise (GSE) guidelines, applicable federal and state regulations, bank policies, and Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) requirements,; including verifying transactions and account balances, and all related consumer regulatory requirements.
  • Issue loan approvals, suspensions, or denials with clear supporting conditions or reasons.
  • Maintain current knowledge of underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and industry trends to support sound lending decisions and risk management.
  • Collaborate with loan officers, processors, and other team members to resolve underwriting issues and ensure timely loan decisions and maintain accurate, complete, and audit-ready loan documentation.
  • Respond to internal and external audits and quality control reviews by providing required documentation and information.
  • Support continuous improvement of underwriting processes by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Promote a strong risk and compliance culture by following policies, identifying potential issues, and supporting consistent risk mitigation practices.
  • Stay current on Bank products, services, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements through ongoing training and application in daily work.
