About The Position

Astrion is hiring a Senior Modeling and Simulation Engineer to support the C3I and Infrastructure Division (AFLCMC/HNI) at Hanscom AFB in Bedford, Massachusetts. The division provides enterprise support to more than 110 active Air Force, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve installations and bases. This role supports Air Force Intranet (AFINC) Weapon System programs, including Next Generation Gateway and Zero Trust efforts. The position requires a Secret clearance and U.S. citizenship, and travel as needed by the customer. The engineer will support and conduct modeling and simulation studies, including analyses of system and component performance, engineering trade-offs, system effectiveness, cost, and logistics. The work includes developing and maintaining modeling best practices, assessing model compliance with regulations and best practices, building models and constraints for complex analyses, and helping solve weapon-system issues involving networking and communications. The engineer will work with analysts and Government clients to validate intelligence data and characterize classified threat systems for engineering- through mission-level analyses. The role also involves applying software and systems methods to complex technical problems; conducting investigations and tests; evaluating vendors; and providing technical consultation. Work may address military communications networks, susceptibility to Integrated Air Defense Systems, concept alternatives, development planning, and the effectiveness and lethality of new systems and technologies. The position uses modeling and simulation tools and may involve MATLAB, Simulink, or C++, RF and antenna modeling, data management, technical documentation, analysis reports, and briefings. Digital Engineering, Digital Thread, and Digital Twin techniques are used across the system lifecycle.

  • Experience with software engineering and a modeling and simulation, radar, or communications background.
  • Experience with Radio Frequency (RF) and antenna modeling and simulation.
  • Experience in technical writing and working in a research environment.
  • Experience with C2 processes and Live, Virtual, and Constructive environments.
  • Ability to assess RF performance with software.
  • Experience with analysis and modeling and simulation tools such as System Tool Kit, Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration and Modeling software tool, Riverbed Modeler, or similar tools.
  • Experience coding in MATLAB, Simulink, or C++.
  • Excellent statistical analysis or operations research skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to communicate with military officers, leadership, and Government civilians.
  • Ability to assist with management of the Next Gen Gateway MBSE program, serving as the blueprint code for the system-of-systems level and as the AFINC PMO point of contact with the NGG vendor.
  • Ability to manage ongoing configuration governance and project schedules.
  • Understanding of cloud-based applications and Cameo Enterprise Architecture, with ability to operate on TeamWork Cloud (TWC).
  • Understanding and practice of SysML and UAF.
  • Ability to connect MBSE languages to network engineering configurations across different classification levels.
  • Ability to read and translate DFAR documents, particularly Technical Requirements, Block 39, NIST 800-53 Rev. 5, Zero Trust documents, and System/Subsystem Design Description documents (S/SDD).
  • Ability to establish traceability from goals to requirements, capabilities, tools, and configuration items, including ports, protocols, and services management.

Responsibilities

  • Support and conduct simulation studies of system and component performance, engineering trade-offs, system effectiveness, cost, and logistics.
  • Review and model work for compliance with regulations and best practices, and develop and maintain modeling best practices.
  • Analyze complex problems and develop models and constraints for complex dynamic structural, thermal, or other analyses.
  • Review and support development of appropriate models to address complex weapon-system issues, including networking and communications.
  • Develop and apply advanced software and systems methods, theories, and research techniques to investigate and solve complex technical problems.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and plan approaches and organize resources to solve complex technical problems; conduct investigations and tests of considerable complexity.
  • Evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services and provide technical consultation to technical staff or other organizations.
  • Work with onsite analysts and Government clients to verify intelligence data needed for modeling and simulation analyses.
  • Coordinate with internal and external organizations to gather capability and performance data for classified threat systems and ensure proper threat-model characterization.
  • Apply analysis tools, object models, and analytical techniques to mission-level analyses, including communications-network performance, susceptibility to Integrated Air Defense Systems, concept alternatives, development planning, and analysis of new systems and technologies.
  • Use modeling and simulation tools and adapt current or externally sourced models as needed.
  • Manage data and prepare documentation, analysis reports, and briefings.
  • Employ Digital Engineering, Digital Thread, and Digital Twin techniques across the system lifecycle.
