About The Position

Reads water meters and records water consumption; performs service connections and disconnections. This role involves operating hand-held electronic equipment and requires the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. The position demands continuous periods of walking and standing, with the ability to bend, reach, and position oneself for work in confined areas or overhead. The Senior Meter Reader must be able to work for sustained periods in outside atmospheric conditions and handle physical demands in excess of sedentary work. Effective communication in English is essential for conveying, recording, and exchanging information, as well as explaining procedures and following instructions. The role requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to instructions, deal with standardized problems, make independent judgments, and acquire knowledge related to the occupation. Numerical aptitude for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is necessary. Interpersonally, the role requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions, adapt to stress during emergencies or tight deadlines, and exercise consistent tact and courtesy when interacting with professionals, county staff, and the general public.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Six (6) months of experience performing utility service connections/disconnections.
  • Ability to operate hand-held electronic equipment.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Ability to remain on feet for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to bend legs at knees to come to rest on knee(s).
  • Ability to reach, extending hand(s) in any directions.
  • Ability to traverse irregular, uneven, and/or erratically moving surfaces frequently.
  • Continuous periods of walking and/or standing.
  • Ability to position self for work in confined areas or for work overhead.
  • Ability to work for sustained periods of exposure to outside atmospheric conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record and exchange information.
  • Ability to explain procedures and to give, receive and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs service connections and disconnections as a result of an emergency, customer request, or non-payment.
  • Obtains and records meter readings at the location and time of service connection or disconnection.
  • Obtains and records joined initial and final readings using Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) analytics software.
  • Facilitates drive-by meter readings as needed.
  • Locates and uncovers buried meters.
  • Inspects meters for tampering, malfunctions or operational deficiencies; maintains documentation of any observed irregularities.
  • Clears mud and debris from meter cases.
  • Notifies customers of account deficiencies (i.e., abnormal reading, lack of deposit, notice of disconnection).
  • Responds to customer inquiries.
  • Reports questionable readings, water leaks and vacant residences where service has not been disconnected.
  • Reports meters in need of repair or replacement; replaces broken or non-functioning meters, including lid and wire replacements.
  • Retrieves customer account payments from drop-box locations and delivers to Customer Service.
  • Places new addresses in correct route and reading sequence order.
  • Assists in upgrading the system.
  • Trains and instructs staff on methods and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
