About The Position

Legacy Health is seeking an experienced, mission-driven physician leader to join as Senior Medical Director of Obstetrics and Family Birth. This role provides strategic and clinical leadership for programs focused on safe, patient-centered, and equitable care for birthing patients, newborns, and families across a regional health system. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and forward-thinking leader who can engage clinicians, operational partners, and community stakeholders to strengthen quality, support innovation, and advance Legacy Health's commitment to serving families with dignity and excellence. This is a 1.0 FTE position, split between 0.60 FTE administrative duties and 0.40 FTE clinical practice. The Senior Medical Director will guide a team of Medical Directors across Legacy Medical Group, including leadership for perinatology, obstetrics and gynecology, and nurse midwife managers. The role involves strategic planning, workforce development, program growth, service line planning, union engagement, and collective bargaining, in partnership with administrative leaders and Clinical Vice Presidents. The leader is accountable for the overall performance and success of assigned clinics and specialties, providing oversight, mentorship, and professional development to Clinic and Specialty Medical Directors, ensuring high-quality patient care, operational excellence, financial sustainability, and provider engagement.

Requirements

  • Graduate from a four-year U.S. medical school or the equivalent.
  • Residency completed and Board Certified in a relevant medical specialty (OB/GYN or Perinatologist).
  • A minimum of five years practicing medicine in their specialty.
  • Three years of leadership experience, including financial management responsibilities.
  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in applicable state(s).
  • Active or courtesy member in good standing with the medical staff for each hospital where the physician provides services or the Legacy Medical Group.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of clinical operations within assigned areas, including day-to-day functions, quality and patient safety, financial performance, and physician hiring.
  • Develop and execute strategic initiatives within assigned areas.
  • Ensure adequate physician and support staffing through strategic workforce planning and resource allocation.
  • Promote program growth and new program development to enhance patient access.
  • Work with senior leadership on collective bargaining with the union.
  • Manage physician compensation, ensuring accurate and timely payments.
  • Oversee contract management, including employment agreements and professional service agreements.
  • Assist with budget preparation, financial tracking, and demonstrate financial stewardship.
  • Develop individual physician and APP performance metrics aligned with institutional goals.
  • Oversee credentialing and re-credentialing processes for providers.
  • Review and revise operational policies and procedures to align with evidence-based practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, regulatory agency standards, and ethical behavior.
  • Establish and lead professional development and mentorship programs for team members.
  • Establish and execute effective communication processes and communicate standards clearly.
  • Model excellence in professionalism and address unprofessional behavior.
  • Conduct comprehensive annual evaluations of physicians and APPs, providing feedback and identifying growth opportunities.
  • Develop new and innovative programs, promote growth of existing programs, and optimize practice efficiency.
  • Identify gaps in service offerings and develop strategic plans to address them and grow market share.
  • Develop and manage clinical care quality and patient safety review processes.
  • Address quality issues promptly and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Monitor and practice specialty and clinic quality and patient safety performance metrics.
  • Lead peer review and education initiatives.
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with best practice protocols, guidelines, and clinical pathways.
