The Producibility and Prototyping Center strives to develop, mature, and deploy advanced product development capabilities across the Hardware Engineering discipline, enabling the business to deliver high quality work products at competitive discriminating velocity and cost. The Critical Item Producibility Readiness Department is seeking a Senior Producibility Engineer. This is an onsite position based in Tucson, Arizona. The Producibility and Dimensional Management Section works directly with Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Processes, Design and Drafting teams, Operations, Quality Supply Chain, and key suppliers, to implement mechanical producibility improvements on new and emerging programs as well as upgrades to existing programs. The team executes tolerance optimization through one-dimensional and three-dimensional tolerance analysis modeling and works with the design team to influence the final design. Early engagement in the conceptual stage and throughout the development process ensures that our designs are optimized with respect to methods of manufacture.

Requirements

  • Bachelors in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) Degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with detailed knowledge of one manufacturing process such as machining, casting, welding, forging, injection mold, etc.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing and/or Assembly workshops.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
  • Active and existing security clearance required after day 1

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) Lead.
  • ASME Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Professional Certification
  • Experience performing two or three-dimensional tolerance analyses.
  • Exposure and or basic understanding of more than one of the following standard manufacturing processes such as: multi axis machining, sheet metal fabrication, casting, 3-D printing, welding, precision mechanical assembly, and mechanical inspection processes

Responsibilities

  • Work with the hardware design team to influence design producibility.
  • Perform producibility assessments and lead Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) engagements to drive cost out of the design.
  • Leverage CAD tools such as DFM-Pro to analyze and optimize designs.
  • Track DFMA engagements completed by the discipline, and review for completeness and applicability.
  • Manage product cost reduction initiatives towards a product cost target
  • Perform and review one-dimensional tolerance analyses.
  • Assess suppliers for their capability and readiness and offer support to ensure success in meeting contractual deliveries.
  • Engage with program design teams, communicate analysis results, and negotiate design modifications.
  • Occasional travel will be required to support supplier activities and collaborate with department/directorate peers.
