About The Position

Johnson Controls is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer, Vacuum Systems, for its Stack Forging Thermal Solutions team in Burlington, Massachusetts. The team develops high-performance thermal components and cooling loop solutions for AI, high-performance computing, and mission-critical systems. The role focuses on bringing products from laboratory development into mass production by commissioning and improving next-generation machines used in the Stack Forging process. The position generally requires working onsite four days per week. Candidates must be within commuting distance of the office or able to relocate. Relocation packages are available. Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents will be considered because sponsorship is unavailable. The engineer will take technical ownership of machine and subsystem design, working with product, process, applications, and operations teams. The role involves vacuum-system design and analysis, equipment efficiency and reliability improvements, requirements development, vendor management, prototyping, testing, and root-cause analysis. The position requires a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least five years of industry experience, including demonstrated experience designing high-vacuum or ultra-high-vacuum systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing vacuum chambers and components for high-vacuum or ultra-high-vacuum environments, including material selection, weld design, and outgassing considerations.
  • Proficiency in thermal analysis of vacuum systems, including radiative heat transfer, thermal gradients, and bakeout planning.
  • Ability to perform conductance calculations and pumpdown modeling to optimize system performance.
  • Experience applying FEA to evaluate structural loads, thermal stresses, and deformation under vacuum.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; sponsorship is not available.
  • Must be within commuting distance of the Burlington, Massachusetts office or able to relocate.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with metal additive manufacturing, robotics, or industrial automation.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, including 3D printing, milling, lathing, laser cutting, CNC, or hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design components for machines in the Stack Forging manufacturing system, including automated equipment for material preparation, cutting, inspection, bonding, and assembly.
  • Run design processes covering requirements, specifications, concept generation, concept down-selection, and design reviews.
  • Document and communicate design processes and decisions.
  • Improve overall equipment efficiency, manufacturing tolerances, process stability, process monitoring, machine reliability, and automation.
  • Refine and revisit machine requirements with cross-functional product, process, applications, and operations teams.
  • Perform proof-of-concept calculations and benchtop testing to inform design decisions.
  • Conduct system- and subsystem-level design and analysis, using parametric modeling to evaluate trade-offs.
  • Own and update subsystem designs, bills of materials, specifications, CAD models, and drawings.
  • Select and manage external vendors for components and subsystems.
  • Perform statistical analysis for assembly tolerance stack-up and conduct root-cause analyses.
  • Commission and improve next-generation machines used in the Stack Forging process.
