About The Position

Locus Robotics is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the development of our autonomous mobile robots and related accessories. This role sits within the Hardware R&D group and focuses on design, analysis, and cross-functional collaboration to bring scalable, cost-effective hardware solutions to production.

Requirements

  • BSME or MSME with at least 7+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Academic or hands-on experience in robotics, mechanical, or electromechanical design
  • Familiarity with design for manufacturability (machined parts, sheet metal, castings, thermoplastics)
  • Ability to design and execute experiments to validate robot performance
  • Hands-on prototyping experience (machining, 3D printing, rapid iteration methods)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards
  • Experience generating RFQs and collaborating with suppliers
  • Exposure to risk analysis methods (e.g., What-if analysis, FMEA)
  • Collaborative, hands-on team player mindset
  • Comfortable with occasional customer interaction

Responsibilities

  • Take the inputs from both internal and external customers and generate sub-system requirements for new and existing robots.
  • Design, model, and detail draft elements of autonomous mobile robots and their supporting accessories using SolidWorks.
  • Utilize a set of requirements to design elegant solutions both quickly and carefully, independently preempting issues of manufacturability and future maintenance.
  • Evaluate designs for strength, stiffness and long life, including fatigue analysis of static components and life estimation for bearings or gears.
  • Design components and systems that reduce assembly effort; work with the operations team to verify these approaches and incorporate their feedback.
  • Design individual components that can be manufactured in high volume at low cost while meeting functional requirements.
  • Proactively engage with suppliers to determine competitive manufacturing strategies for new and existing designs.
  • Build and test prototype and pre-production robots and subassemblies.
  • Work with manufacturing and procurement teams inside Locus Robotics to meet development and production timelines.
  • Develop test plans for verification and validation of designs.
  • Accurately document work and present this work to peers, customers, and company leadership.
